Viscous garnet fading at the rim. Complex, foresty nose - wild berries, pine needles, menthol, almost juniper, with tertiary licorice root and white pepper. With air the medicinal notes quickly evaporate, leaving concentrated strawberry fruit perfectly balanced with ripe acidity and gentle tannins. Like the best pinots this has layers of flavor that go on and on. Maybe this can get better but it's pretty irresistible now!
Pre-Memorial Day Wine Before/During/After Dinner (Chicago, IL): Bottle had been opened the day before. I was told it was very firm and backward, so was given a day to mellow. Lots of structure was very dominant that second day, in the forefront ahead of the black cherry and berry flavors. Good raw materials so I'd cellar this longer, but don't have a good sense of where/ when this will be more pleasurable.
HK Central Wine Club. 750 ml. Non-decanted. Deep purple. Concentrated nose of cherry and strawberries (burnt). Red fruit medley with some tones of oak, caramel. Quite alcoholic and acidic, but good structure. Nevertheless round, velvety mouthfeel. Still very young. In 10 years?
