| | Tasted by clava on 10/21/2009 & rated 89 points: Tasted 10-16-09. Nose initially tight but showing currant-y fruit, earth & minerals. Some leather arose with air time. The flavors are high intensity prune, tart plums, olive, minerals & gunmetal; strong & solid. The 15% ABV is evident- the wine tastes high octane. The density, forward tannins, & "grip" are significant. With some time in the glass there is more complexity to be had. The palate impression is meaty, chewy, beefy and savory; almost viscous. There is an interesting grace note of charred caramel and eventually some black pepper. Big stuff. Does not completely hang together yet.. it's like a freight train blasting through the station... tastes young. Should be more enjoyable with short additional bottle time. Our bottle did not keep particularly well after opening, so drink it up on day one. Overall a good bottle & good potential. However, not amazing; does not slay me the way a really superb CdP does. | | Tasted by Patas on 9/29/2009 & rated 90 points: Delicious wine. Medium bodied. Very fruit forward, lots of raspberries/strawberries with lavender. A bit meaty. Better after one hour of decanting. Good buy at $25. (1095 views) |
| | Tasted by rmodak on 9/17/2009 & rated 91 points: Powerful wine, with raspbery, olives, violets, minerals and fig. Packed in at present, dense and tannic, this opened slowly in the glass. Should improve over the next few years. (1140 views) |
| | Tasted by peter516 on 9/8/2009 & rated 92 points: red fruit with some moderate spice, some floral notes. was a bit understated at first but then opened up to reveal much more depth. very well-integrated, balanced. not too hot as others mention. grippy tannins with a moderate length finish with some ash on the back end. not as strong on the second day, seems a bit more one-dimensional. | | Tasted by Ekoostik on 8/26/2009 & rated 91 points: I actually quite liked this wine, although it came across to be as a bit CA style. Lush slightly sweet fruit, thats very clean and pure. Finishes with just a touch of heat. Reminds me somewhat of a lighter styled Linne Calodo blend with some Zin. Ultimately its a fun drink but not an intellectual one really, but for the price it a decent buy imo. I dont think I would wait years and years on this one. (1185 views) |
| | Tasted by Lucky Jim on 6/9/2009 & rated 91 points: Another excellent bottle. My first experience with this wine (as too hot and alcoholic) has happily not been repeated. Wish I had bought more. (1576 views) |
| | Tasted by Anonymous on 5/25/2009 & rated 90 points: Young and a bit lactic. Primary soft cherry fruit in the bouquet. Very juicy fruits with some garrigue as well. A little sweetness. Excellent wine, but not wow! (1528 views) |
| | Tasted by BradA on 5/2/2009 & rated 92 points: A massive improvement from the first bottle tasted! Well balanced, deep and dark with plummy flavors fine tannins and a nose of rhone's scents of scorched earth bramble and earth. Drinking this wine made me recall Harry Karis' notes and exuberance for the producer. Nice viscosity on the palate and a lingering finish completes the wine--I will try to find some 06 and 07's. | | Tasted by Lucky Jim on 4/3/2009 & rated 90 points: Thankfully, this bottle did not give the impression of heat I got when I tried a bottle (from a different source) a year ago. This time the wine was initially a but pruney but quickly transformed and evolved in the glass and offered up a nice old-school nose of herbs and resin. Good stuff at an excellent price from Garagiste. 2nd day: rather surprisingly it seemed to decline somewhat. (1861 views) |
| | Tasted by Anonymous on 10/18/2008: A Few from The Sorting Table (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Medium red with some lightening. Nice mixture of olive, garrigue, and dark fruit. Medium bodied, fresh acidity, well tamed tannins for the vintage. Fruit is downplayed here. A wine of savory complexity and good balance rather than power. Classic in some respects, but it if anything, it is too retrained and could use more depth of fruit. Would not buy at the current price. (2081 views) |
| | Tasted by hutch on 10/12/2008 & rated 89 points: A co-worker's Farewell: Tried after the beaucastel, which isn't fair. This was nice, but nothing I would rush to seek out. Med bodied, good fruit, some spice notes. 88-90 (2151 views) |
| | Tasted by TashNYC on 10/10/2008 & rated 91 points: At the Princeton Corkscrew tasting: Lovely nose of fruit and herbs. Bright red fruit and some herbs on the end. Drinking tight but still good. Later, as the bottle opened, showed some chalk on the finish.
this was a nice wine to drink ... but didn't fall over myself to buy it at the $40.50 retail (regularly $45) Not sure what the difference between the regular and this reserve. Winemaker said the wine is blended 1st, and then aged in barrels. (1268 views) |
| | Tasted by tanglenet on 9/6/2008: Wine Club SF Châteauneuf-du-Pape (San Francisco): Served at a tasting at the Wine Club in SF. Quick notes: sweet black fig on the nose. On the palate: black fruit with a touch of balsamic, fig, light in the middle with a somewhat short finish. Good. (2162 views) |
| | Tasted by David J Cooper on 8/8/2008: deep red. Lots of spicey Grenache fruit. Lots of clear fruit flavours Nice structure. Pretty open for the vintage. Hints of meat and cherry on the nose. Very nice. Great future. (2158 views) |
| | Tasted by greenblanket on 6/28/2008: Chateauneuf du Pape Tasting - Seattle: This presented as a young wine with lots of dark fruit and tannin. There were also notes of game, beef, earth and stem. Greenblanket wondered about the amount of Mourvedre included. It seemed to be a traditional but not an old school Chateaunuef. Excellent. (2371 views) |
| | Tasted by BradA on 6/7/2008 & rated 88 points: I bought this with high expectations, now granted at $33, one cannot get too far ahead of oneself. For an autumnal night of meatloaf, this seemed just the ticket (scratchy record noise) yes--here we are in June and the weather is 53*! So, meatloaf was perfect!
The wine is bright, cheerful in color and loaded with some puckering tannins. It also packs the wallop of zinfandel like alcohol--if the heat subsides, this will be a really great bottle of wine! Lets reserve a point of two of upside potential and see how the wine develops. I have some fiance waiting for cooler weather (to ship) and will be eager to try that bottling out too. (2443 views) |

| | Tasted by Barbara B on 5/2/2008 & rated 75 points: Approfondimenti: Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Alba, Italy): [The bottle did not say Cuvée, only Réservé, so I am not entirely sure it's this wine...] Ruby, not dense. Balsamic, dry cardboard and animal on the nose, plus serious alcohol fumes shooting into eyes and nose. Harsh, with metallic finish, no redeeming attributes. I would have called this defective except the vigneron was there and he said it was due to different cepage and terrôir. (2342 views) |
| | Tasted by Lucky Jim on 2/27/2008: Compelling nose with more fruit than I expect from a CdP but also some complexity. Unfortunately this wine is just too alcoholic on the palate -- throws off the balance to the degree that I just didn't enjoy it the way I hoped I would. (I have had several of the 03 Barroche bottling and enjoyed them but was looking forward to a less pruney wine. This one is less pruney, but too hot. I don't know if bottle age will change that, but I tend to doubt it.) (2737 views) |
