Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Still some life showing on the palate in this oldie. Murky, cloudy tawny color. Reductive leather, soy and black tea notes on the nose. This was showing lots of age, but I agree that you wouldn't think it was from '49. Rustic raspberries, unique and a little cheesy on the back end of the nose and palate. Caramel. A nice opportunity to sample this nicely aged Bordeaux.
Only a true wine lover would have appreciated the look of this magnum. The bottle was dirty and the label was ripped, and hard to read, as it was covered by stains from the original wrapping paper. The fill was bottom neck.
The color was impressive with a deep red center and tawny rims. The nose was soil oriented with black fruit, soy, and gravel. In the mouth, it was refined yet it had solid rounded tannin and very good length. This was a plump wine with good complexity. Again, this wine took over 3 hours to show its best.
This magnum would have lasted for many, many years but I doubt it would have improved. Drink soon.
