  • weeds, fig white flesh, lift like mint, touch violets, funkier when colder - pond scum, moss at side of pond; slightly wide/round for a Chinon due to vintage, very nice

  • Shows a dollop of brett, but the ripeness of the vintage means there's enough material here to counter it. Dark fruit, meaty and savory, quite rich for Chinon but with very refined tannins. Much riper and less backward than the 2002 drank alongside, but less intense and interesting. Improved with a few of hours, where the brett became less noticeable and the richness and structure began to assert itself. Outclassed and not especially typical but still very good.

  • Loire Night at Racines (Racines NY - New York, NY): So while the 2002 Baudry was like a Milanese runway model, this was more like the model had moved to Chicago and ate a ton of hot dogs. Still beautiful, still sexy, but with a bit more heft behind it. The aromas were powerful, dense and sappy. Yeah…this was more about the red fruit sap while the 2002 had more airy floral notes. The palate was big, powerful and just oozing with class. Everyone thinks about 2003s in France as being full of glycerin and polish…well the Loire seems to hate the generalizations. Lots of elegance here. I think it outpaced the 2002 by a hair.

  • very different to the Amirault, weird nose - cooked veg, volatile whiff, has this been cooked/heat shocked?

  • light (12.5% abv) and perfectly balanced with a lamb shoulder dish, even if the acidity was a little high in pairing the dish for me. The wine was fantastic: integrated red fruits verging on plum, touches of woody leather/polish, good balance with slightly resolved (yet still pleasantly astringent) tannins and a slightly rounded palate.
