Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasting. Open severald ays earlier, then gassed and refrigerated. This is a wine I like in mnay vintages and 2005 is no exception. Big and bold, perhaps easily showing Volnay charm right now, but lots of good background soice with large scales, robust fruit.
Pleasant soon after opening, but it added depth and substantially over the next two hours. Still young and I will defer tasting the next bottle for a couple more years. A medium-weight, sophisticated Burgundy that is not dominated by the fruit.
Dinner with Robert Bower of Taylor Fladgate (Carlos' Restaurant, Highland Park): Fresh, medium depth of color. Slightly tight nose, but hinting at some depth, just a touch of fumey alcohol. Still very primary, undeveloped, extremely ripe, almost confected fruit. Some time in the glass helped blow off some of the alcohol, and this just might grow into a spectacular wine in 10 years or more. No score for now.
