Served in magnum. Amazingly fresh for a 99, dark berries, spice and coffee on the nose, and silky on the palate, medium long. This was tried next to a 94 Gruand Larose, so a to see how well the SA blend stood to a second growth Bordeaux blend. The verdict around the table was 50-50, with the structure of Gruand Larose and the fruitiness and spice of Rust en Vrede, the winning arguments, respectively.

opened and poured. deep ruby, still opaque in the middle, 2-3mm fading on the rim. nose: cassis, blueberry, vanilla, herbs of Provence, hint of cedar, tobacco, dried weed. palate: medium+ body, acid and alcohol is pulling back, a fruit-juice like quality is prominent, which is very pleasant and makes the wine easy to drink, but also tells us that it's time to open tha remaining bottles as they're on the way downhill. 11 Caudalie finish that gets increasingly watery in the end is a reflection of this.

Lush aromas of black fruit, espresso, dark chocolate and meaty spice. Black currant and plum flavors with cloves and leather. Moderate finish. Just entering its peak drinking window. 71% Cabernet, 20% Syrah, 9% Merlot.
