popped in pm drank til 10pm, last sip best sip. Really needed at least 2-3 hours to show. The Cathiard orange peel and tension shows and over time, and this turned out excellent. Oak yes, but integrated and I can see why Bordeaux comparisons are drawn, there is ripeness and structure but it again really needed that oxygen. So much zip and weight. It’s just a plain good burgundy in the style of the maker.

Birthday celebration part 2: This wine was a reminder to give Burgundies plenty of air. This was opened by the person who brought it at 1pm for dinner but was unbelievably primary and jammy with creamy vanilla oak at first - so much so that I guessed 2018 Rouget Vosne! On reveal we decided to give it a couple of hours and what a difference it made, still very much a masculine wine but the oak receded to reveal a incredibly heady mix of deep, spicy red fruit. Gained a laser-like precision and focus that only the best makers can achieve, so much so that I didn't want to finish my last sip.

On the nose very ripe, macerated cherries and hint of VA. On the palate quite Bordeaux like, too much for me, just not Burgundian or fine enough. Leaning towards 03 cooked fruit style. Some japanese plum notes coming through.
To me slightly disappointing and weaker than 08, 09, 10 or 12 side by side.

The 2005 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee 1er Cru En Orveaux remains rich and tightly wounded, it feels like it needs another 15 years of cellaring before it will shed its layers of tannins. Intense array of dark fruits, ultra-ripe tannins and concentrated oak spices. Quite tannic and heavy on oak, Bordeaux like. Drink from 2025. (89/100)

Same bottle as the previous two reviewers. Absolutely fantastic wine and only got better as the night went on.
