This poured a striking golden-tawny. One sniff and I was sure this was corked, as there was a clear raw fungal note on the nose. No one else got TCA though, and the wine showed lots of fruit/sweetness on the palate, so I wondered if it was instead somewhat tainted by by random secondary molds and fungi growing on the cork, as this MEC release spent 20+ years in the humid chalk cellars of Charles Heidsieck. These fungal notes never diminished for me, and I still picked them up on day 2, so I'm calling this corked.

Nice bottle with good verve, mature and just perfect right now! Well balanced and a classic champagne with smoke, hard bred, coffee and popcorn with butter. I tasted this when it was released around 2002, I couldn't imagine it's future at that moment. Would love to drink this again!

Excellent with lobster. Same note as last month: Degree of maturity just right for my taste. Lively and balanced with mature and yeasty notes, plenty of depth. To drink in the next year or so.
