  • Dark color, blackberries, soil, tannins, green pepper, some oak, powerful,
I see it as a good effort in a difficult year.

  • This time I decanted and we gave it plenty of time to open up. It did open up and I could smell the Loire Cab Franc aromas that I enjoy so much - graphite and black fruit and soil. But the wine is simply marred by oak, and it is not integrated. The effect is drying and unpleasant, and it's a shame because what lies underneath seems quite nice.

  • Surprisingly pretty and delicate in character, for a such a large wine. This is delicious right out of the gate, and it's a pleasure to drink, especially with something to eat. But over a few hours, and especially the next day, it starts to feel as though the raw material is overshadowed by wood spice and by wood tannins, which are rather drying on the finish. I think the raw material is lovely and sort of wish they'd left it to speak for itself instead of raising it in new wood - perhaps the oak will integrate one day but it hasn't happened yet and it doesn't feel as though it will. But who knows...

  • Bam! This wine seems to be finally coming into its own. For my palate, at or near optimum drinking, although it should hold here for a good long while. There is still structure, but the overbearing qualities it showed intermittently in youth have smoothed over. Decanted for about 45 minutes before dinner ti showed the tobacco and smoke nuances along with dried red fruits and mineral elements. A mushroomy kind of sous-bois also weaved in and out. Carried itself with a real sense of breed. I have 6 or so more bottles and i think one a year for the next five years and then I'll save the last for 10 years out.

Rockss and Fruit

  • By Lyle Fass

(Baudry Chinon La Croix Boissee) This is a personal favorite. I even liked the '03. The color was dark as a moonless night with a nose of crushed flowers, blackurrants and green peppercorn. Acidity was high, tannins were huge and the density was off the charts. The concentration was well....very concentrated and the purity was amazing. This was blakc fruits galore and the texture was thick wet velvet. This was easily the best 2004 Chinon I have had yet. Painfully young and I am eager to finish off the rest of the bottle tonight to see where this baby goes.
