a rich toffee brown in colour and quite viscous, only 11%, theres so much going on here, its almost kaleidoscopic as it changes in the glass, each sniff or sip gives something different, from caramel, hazelnuts, white chocolate, figs, some oxidative notes, dried orange peel, baking spices, its all here. i usually prefer a bit more acidity, but this wine is beautifully balanced, very good but possibly on a slow downward slope now ?

2001 Red Burgundy at Chez Hugo (Chez Hugo, Baltimore): The color of 30 weight motor oil. Viscous, rich and dense on the palate, yet with enough acid to lift it and keep it in balance. Intense perfume that follows on the palate. Stone fruit and fig compote, toffee, some rancio notes, Grand Mariner, and some white florals. This is rich and dense and while it has high acidity to carry its rich frame, I would like more lift. I suspect this is the variety. That said, this does have a lot of acidity for Pinot Gris, yet in overall terms it is more overt and hedonistic than intriguing. Outstanding and very impressive more than lovable for me. Still a decadent rich and layered wine. Fully mature and going to stay there for a decade plus.

2001 Red Burgundy Retrospective (Chez Hugo - Baltimore): Dark brown. Dry fig and dry apricot dominate, caramel, cinnamon and anise. Incredibly concentrated, dense deeply toned dry yellow fruit, bright acidity and an long intense dry fig and cinnamon driven finish. I much prefer the youthful expression of ZH SGNs. This reminds me Malaga a bit.

Dark brown. Burnt sugar, caramel, peach, baking spice, apple pie, earth. Piercing acidity and a finish that lasts two minutes.
