Fantastic white wine. Darkening to almost a bronze color and a little oxidized on the nose but in a good way. Nice fruit, mineral and no hard edges. Had the 09 version of this wine last week in Venice, Italy last week and this version is much better. THESE wines definetely age well.

(CALVARINO Pieropan) UPDATE: Speaker's Corner Lyle Fass goes live again with a new editorial that is certainly thought provoking. Get in on the live discussion here: http://www.garagistewine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6730 <http://www.garagistewine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6730> ******************* Pieropan Dear Friends, Not sure how I can follow-up yesterday's Galardi offer but I'll try (the response even surprised me - yikes). We must forge ahead so a duo of world-class white wine seemed appropriate... Here are two examples from Pieropan, a white wine specialist in the Veneto that deserves far more attention in the US. Both of these are impeccably made with contrasting styles. The Calvarino is for classicists and the La Rocca is for those seeking more weight but the regal tone of Chassagne. Both are educational as well as very fairly priced - both are made from indigenous varietals: 2001 Pieropan Soave Classico Superiore "Calvarino" An experiment in ageing, both the Calvarino and La Rocca are known to evolve for a number years (although many tasters are fooled into thinking they are early drinkers). This wine should be at or near peak right now and it's a steal of a deal. 2003 Pieropan Soave Classico Superiore "La Rocca" This wine has never really taken hold in the US but it is thought of with the highest regard in Italy and Europe. The 2003 vintage played right into the hands of the rich style of La Rocca with vines so old the rootstock already had ample depth to cool the resulting extract. This will be very interesting to watch develop and it's also near peak - an exceptional example for the style at a price that is eye-opening to say the least: Both are EXTREMELY LIMITED at this price - about the same as in Verona Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy7055 Italy7066

It shows its age with plenty of nuttiness, but still with some freshness and it took off when paired with some Italian cheeses.

Clearly much more minerally depth than the standard cuvée.
