Dinner with Friends (R&R's): Double blind. Brick red with shades of brown, likely an older wine. Aromas of prune, raisin and walnuts. Flavors of fig and ripe dark fruit. Develops peppery spice notes with time in the glass and fleshes out on the palate, gaining a bit more length in the finish. Raisiny and ripe. A style that doesn't suit my palate, though I understand why it has fans. Guessed 2007/2009 Chateauneuf. 89-90 pts. (R&R)

This ex-chateau release was just amazing. Most of my experience with Cayuse is the incredible funkyness. This wine had none of that but was a thing of dark syrah spice and utter smoothness. Maybe I just need to age my Cayuse 15-20 years befroe drinking!

Warm nights, big wines (park ridge country club, park ridge, IL): Nose: The nose is deep and savory with black cherries, black raspberries, earth, peppery tones, licorice, violets, and a touch of liqueur notes. There is some real flesh to the fruit on this and while it shows off a lot of savoriness, there is an extra intensity to it all.
Taste: The feel is Full bodied with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The structure has peeled back, but the alcohol has some heat to it. The feel is plush and deep with black cherries, black raspberries, peppery tones, licorice, violets, and some liqueur.
Overall: I thought this was maybe a NorCal Syrah as it showed a lot of flesh while having an attractive peppery streak. This is drinking perfectly right now and may be slightly on the downslope.

Multi-faceted and dense nose, from floral down to meaty and earthy notes. Black fruit and wood smoke up front, moving smoothly into an earthy, wooden, meaty, bacony core and finishing up with soy sauce and a slight hint of tannin at the finish. Extremely long, lingers for a long long time.
