  • What a privilege to drink this 34 year impeccably crafted wine. Tobacco, sour cherry, plum, spices, increasing leather as the wine opened up. Very complex with good length and integrated tannins. There was still plenty of acidity and fruit to keep the wine fresh and lively and I feel confident that another bottle in good condition would still have at least 5 years of life. Reading some of the other tasting notes, it's clear that there's a lot of bottle variation but this one was perfect, with the cork extracting without crumbling.

  • Better than the previous bottle. Beets on the nose. Certainly mature but the tannins have held up well and there was enough fruit to make this a gently pleasant and attractive wine. On a separate note, glasses of this wine were drawn through a Coravin on different evenings and it showed the Coravin is ideal for older wines maintaining their freshness as opposed to younger red wines which suffer from not getting enough air when drawn through the Coravin.

  • From Magnum. On a downward curve and past its peak. OK but not as good as the younger vintages that preceded it.

  • Meerlust Rubicon Vertical with Hannes Myburgh (Handford Wines, London): This wine is a testament to what a great wine the Rubicon really is. Along with the 2003 (Papies 93) was our favorite. A lovely complex and expressive nose, light herbal notes, light pepper. Balanced wine, elegant and definitely felt younger than an 84 especially vs the poor showing of the 89 before (papies 88). Intense, good acidity and firm. Rich core of fruit. Pure and elegant. such a joy. rated it 93 ont he evening but maybe we shoudl have given it 94

  • Much younger in appearance than the 1989. Very complex on the nose with lots of depth and interest, tobacco, leather, spices, cedar - just lovely. Still good grip and power on the palate, soft, round, elegant and fine. Wonderful length. My wine of the night - an outstanding bottle and an absolute delight!
