  • A couple years later, this has mellowed out a bit, and left open overnight it improves even more. That said, this wine was still overrated by the reviewers out of the gates and while I think it will still improve in the bottle, it's just never going to be a wine of too much interest.

  • Deep dark Ruby, almost black. Medium+ intensity nose of slighly overripe/ verging on stewed black fruit characters.

This wine is huge in a way I have not experienced in an old world wine. Fresh black fruits and also dried fruits (slight raisin, blackberry, fig), with dirt and soil impressions. thick mouthcoating full body, grainy massive tannins, high, warming alcohol. Med+ finish.

Different and thrilling. Rustic. No overt wood. Long life ahead.

  • Dark as night, with the merest horizon of ruby on the edges. Rich, complex aromas of dark, mulled fruit and (strangely) celery, with a suggestion of wood-spice and vanilla, tar, ashes and liquorice. A suggestion of alcoholic heat. The palate carries the same intense fruit, remarkably fresh, which washes over the grainy tannins which frame the finish. Bitter coffee, bitter gourd, chewy and dense.

Not a wine for anyone looking for fruit (although there is plenty), not a wine for anyone who struggles with tannin or bitterness; but taken as it is, a superb expression of Sagrantino.

I've just noticed the ABV is 16%! It's certainly present, but remarkably well hidden in this monster-wine. I don't recommend waiting - the structure will certainly carry the wine into old age, but without the blast of youthful fruit, this would be very hard work.

  • Odd wine; tannins are insane, so drying and left with an overly sweet aftertaste. Nice Italian nose though, which makes me think that this one might resolve after some years, so maybe best to lay down and see what happens. It can't get worse than it is now!

  • This wine was so high in tannin if not for the ribeye steak and bacon Brussels sprouts I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed. Don’t drink without some fatty meat!
