  • I'm afraid this was old and not in the best condition. Some funky unpleasant flavours and the fruit was drying out.

  • 12x Bordeaux 1983 vs 1993: All wines tasted single blind. Not decanted. As anticipated, the 1983 vintage prevailed in our comparative tasting, scoring 8 to 2 wins against the 1993 vintage, with two ties. The structured, classic ’83s exhibited greater depth and harmony compared to the ‘93s, which tended to be simpler, sometimes slightly green and dry, or at their best, fresh and light. However, in both vintages, aside from a few notable labels, many wines were evidently beyond their peak. The standout was, unsurprisingly, the Margaux (94pts). Tasting the some of the same ’83s a second time a few days later with decanting showed a marked improvement, highlighting the need of aeration.

TN: The nose is somewhat obscured by musty cellar notes, with dark fruit and herbs lurking underneath, accompanied by faint tobacco but lacking precision. It's not a particularly appealing nose. The palate is more expressive, dominated by minerality and tobacco, with a bit of red fruit (and still musty cellar notes, or a hint of TCA?). The balance is decent, supported by fine tannins, good tension, and freshness. Overall, it's an okay wine, lacking any exceptional qualities, leading to a score of 88pts (vs the 84pts of the 1993).

  • Enjoyed with a friend over dinner and didn't take detailed notes, but this Château Montrose was absolutely singing. Tertiary qualities of forest floor, cedar wood, pencil shavings and leather really standing out on the palate. Picked up some truffle, dark fruit on the nose. Just a great example of a vintage that flies under the radar.

  • Bordeaux 1983 vs 1993 face-off: Bouquet of dried leaves, dry earth, nicely juxtaposed by rose water and a more red berry type of fruit with a splash of Kirsch and irony mineral notes. A fruity palate with more red cherry, but quite drying tannin and an abrupt finish leaving you with dry sensation.

  • Brought to a restaurant for my wife's 40th birthday. Based on the comments, served PnP.
At first totally muted, but quickly evolved into a stunning mature Bordeaux with a beautiful mid-palate and a long finish. The color was also strikingly youthful even though the wine has clearly hit its final plateau.
As noted, this is a truly great wine for the price. I would also tend to agree that it should be drunk sooner than later.
