This wine might be past peak or entering a dead stage. Notes of canned asparagus and blackberries. Not bad on the palate but not great either. Slightly medicinal finish.

Translucent red with a dark core. Faint, astringent nose. Cherries and blueberries on the palate but muddled and not pleasing. Soft tannins, harsh acidity. Bit hot (13.8% ABV). Finishes long but flat. Past prime.

Delicious wine. Fruit is still intact. It takes about an hour to fully open up. Modern in style but quite restrained for a wine at almost 15% alcohol. You won't feel it, until you get up! Aging nicely. Drink or hold for another 5 years easily.

Wow. So it has been 9 years since I have popped a bottle of this and the wait was worth it. The 2005 is really hitting a great stride. Still power focused with great balance. Blue and black fruits. When young, this wine was dominated by the stems. Now everything is integrated and is an amazing example of a big Santa Barbara syrah. Full bodied and medium acid. Yum.

From magnum. Drank very well. Integrated flavors with good density, flesh, acidity, freshness, and unobtrusive alcohol. Fruit was hanging on (perhaps more so because of the large format) in harmony with the savory flavors and integrated wood. Could go quite a bit longer in large format.
