Red Burgundy GC 01 (London): Served single blind in a flight of 4. I did pick this out as Drouhin Laroze Beze 01, it simply lacked the stuffing of the other better bottles. While not a bad wine it was a relatively simple one that had some more citric / fresh qualities to it remniscent of a very good village / decent 1er C rather then great GC. It was one of the few wines I decided to spit, so stiff was the competition. But nice for the context and contrast to the Rousseau Beze 01.

Dark no browning. Reticent but attractive bouquet. All a bit ordinary though. Hardly even distinctively Pinot noir let alone conveying anything burgundian. Better with food. Very poor value and poor showing if the vineyard.

Looking at the comments below...these damn burgundies...so tricky and yet so attractive. This one was a goody! Dark ruby and with gem like brilliance. As soon as the bottle was opened the nose revealed an intricate fruit and floral bouquet. We did decant. Plenty of oomph . Top pinot complexity and structure and finesse. Wanted that extra glass when the bottle was finished. Not THE greatest but this is a good example of why we makes a fuss about Pinot from Burgundy. Using Hugh Johnson rating... a half case wine at £80 pb.

Pre-Paulee Birthday Dinner (Jardiniere - San Francisco CA): Overall very nice, just slightly more advanced than I'd expect from 2001.
