  • Wow! From a mag signed by Ben, this wine is singing! Medium garnet in the glass with a well-defined clear meniscus. The nose is all about ripe black fruit, spice, herb, and - a touch of coffee! On the palate this is so smooth and balanced, it wants you to take another sip, especially when paired with food (ok, not a Tomahawk ribeye but a Papa Murphy's thin crust pizza - yum). There is a bit of oak and tannins on the finish, so could have waited. Ben's wines are so good when aged. This bottle was exceptional tonight.

  • Previous notes are right on. Cork broke apart and soft, even though no sign of seepage. Nose has a blend of slight vanilla, cherry and French oak. Slightly more body than most left bank Bordeaux; this is definitely Red Mountain minerality and dark cherry. Nice complexity in the blending, with the finish imparting a strong dose to Red Mtn soil. Quite nice.

  • Subtle old world nose, bright, not brooding, reminiscent of baby Bordeaux but with more zing. Hits you up front with Mineral and dusty tannins giving way to maraschino cherry, and bright fruit. Full mouthfeel and the oak has really integrated well over the years, lingering but not dominating.

This is a wonderfully styled, stereotypical Red Mountain wine, with great structure. It is in a beautiful place and should drink well for a few more years, with the fruit slowly fading into a background supporting role.

If you want to taste a very well made wine that is a great example of specific Washington state terroir from red Mountain, this is it!
I really wish I had more bottles of this one!

  • Drank for Christmas dinner with a perfect prime rib and it was perfect. Definitely ready to drink. Soft tannins, mature fruit and lovely balance. If you have a bottle, I strongly recommend you enjoy it.

  • Tasted alongside the 2001 Ciel du Cheval from Cadence. Wow - this sucker is still full of tannin. The fruit, fortunately, is also very prominent. Ample aromas of dark cherry, cocoa powder and baking spice. The palate is full, but still tightly wound, but the beautiful rhubarb-strawerry pie and dark cherry flavors abound. This is great now, but I'd bet those tannins and that acid will carry this wine effortlessly for another 10 years.
