blind Wow, a perfect bottle, no one was close, still fresh. Even the region was a mystery. Many guessed Barolo or Burgundy. I guessed 61 Bordeaux. Still fruit, sublimely balanced. Masterpiece. 100

Recorked in 1988 at the chateau, this bottle was outstanding. Drank best in the first 45 minutes, but we savored a bottle among four of us for two hours.

From a Cuvelier bottling with upper shoulder fill. Smell of dark chocolate, toffee, sherry, vermouth, petrol, naphtalene and stone fruit. After some aeration notes of cherry liqueur appeared. On the palate bright with layers of fresh acidity. The tannin intensity was a three on a scale of one to ten, almost perfect. Very nice texture and long smokey finish which was, however, dominated by the acidic theme. Fruit was low and difficult to discern. Between three tasters one did not appreciate the petrol notes and considered it undrinkable, one (the only French at the table) gave it a 96. For me this bottle was enjoyable with a solid 92 rating. Impressive for such an old bottle, alas we did not have the chance to compare it to the Chateau bottling.

Riveting in every sense of the word. From start to finish this is the type of wine that brings tears to a wine lover's eyes. Where do you start? With its incredible, textural pleasures of refined silk and velvet? Or with this blend of truffle, smoke, kirsch, licorice and cigar box aromatics? If that is not a total turn on, there is the incredible, seemingly forever finish offering sweet cherries, currants, citrus and earthy nuances. This is the type of wine that you remember for years, if not longer. 92 years young, this is what great wine is all about!

Drunk at Beef Bar in Hong Kong - This wine jumps straight out of the glass and grabs you, there's sweetness aplenty coupled with strong tannins that you find in vintages like '28 ('45 is similar). Only beaten (just) on the night by '47 Mouton. It was fading just a touch after a couple of hours in the glass but I'm happy to excuse this 90 year old's stamina!
