Year 2 - Super Tasting 2 of 5 - Andrew does Rioja (Langdon Hall, Cambridge, ON): This has really held up well and actually evolved and improved with an hour of air in glass. Pours a really gorgeous shade of ruby going out to only medium bricking on the rim. Darker in colour than I had expected. On first pour the aromas were very focused on sweat and saline. With time nose evolved to show smoke, decaying leaves, red currant, spicebox, brandy macerated cherries, mushroom, tangy red fruits and undergrowth. Palate is fairly pleasurable with integrated tannin and refreshing acid. Finish is medium to long.
Year 2 - Super Tasting 2 of 5 - Andrew does Rioja (Langdon Hall, Blair, Ontario): Oh wow....this nose was haunting. Notes of dried cherry, sandalwood, dried flowers, coconut, sweat, saline, leather, cedar, porcini mushroom. So much going on here, fruit is so pure, but the secondary and tertiary characteristics and so integrated. Palate jumps with cherry pit, red flowers, leather, cedar, dried raspberry, dried cherry, cured meat, earth and smooth and polished tannins. The finish is medium + and quite complex. Reference point wine.
Year 2; Tasting 2 of 5; Andrew does Rioja (1954-1994) (Red Room, Langdon Hall, Cambridge, Ontario): Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours. Garnet in the glass, with moderate bricking at the rim. An expressive nose of decaying red fruit, sandalwood, citrus zest, mushroom, decaying leaves, undergrowth, cured meat, dried herbs, leather, coriander, balsamic reduction, sweat and soy. On the palate, structurally, this is relatively light bodied, medium plus acidity and mostly integrated tannin, making this wine feel silky smooth. The finish is moderate, finishing a touch bitter, characterized by dried cranberry, spice, earth and dried herbs. This majestic beauty was seemingly quite stable, sitting in the glass for quite some time with no noticeable decline.
What a surprise. Friend brought this to dinner because he rediscovered it in his basement. The fill was top shoulder, the cork was not even soaked thru and came out intact. The color was still good with just a bit of brown around the edges. Not much fruit showing but age and a classy pedigree were very apparant.
