    (AMON-RA) Amon-Ra Dear Friends, If the word “stylish” can describe a massive wine from 100-120 year old Barossa Shiraz, then let me introduce the 2006 Amon-Ra, the most grown-up wine Ben Glaetzer has ever made. This wine is somewhat dear to me as we were the first in the US to offer it six vintages ago and I still have the first hand-drawn wine label on my desk with the “eye of the Ra” symbol that Ben and Ben were toying with before the first release of the Amon-Ra McLaren Vale (yes, remember, the first release was from the Vale and not the Barossa). Pat and Tim tacked that drawing up behind my desk for about three years as a watchful reminder that the wine is always the boss, not us. It’s funny, as people used to ask me what that eye was doing over my desk, they thought it was some religious motif or other....now almost everyone knows the Amon-Ra label and they barely notice it... While the style of the wine is not necessarily my own, I have followed the evolution of the winemaking from the beginning and I can stand behind this wine as one of Australia’s most fastidious and labor-intensive. Ben Glaetzer makes a lot of different wines but he saves his best for the Amon-Ra - period. Without the Godolphin this year to spark confusion on which wine is the better cuvee (that wine will not be produced again), instead there is under a new label, the Anaparenna (more on that another time). With the lowest alcohol level that I can remember for Amon-Ra (14.0 - 14.5%), this wine is really coming into its own as Ben crafts it in the style he believes is the most reflective of the Ebenezer dry grown vines. Nick’s in Australia recently rated this wine 99pts and I’m not sure I can argue. It is probably the first Amon-Ra to really flirt with triple digit potential as it has everything under its belt - finesse, equilibrium, a massive presence and the artistry of one of Australia’s finest winemakers. Most of you know I have a hard time getting behind most of the megalith wines from South Australia but I have no problem with Ben Glaetzer’s direction and dedication to give the consumer the most for their money. While expensive, this wine delivers the goods to an extreme but the wine itself is not. Really an incredible effort and one that has the chance to make a statement in the ever evolving South Australian Shiraz movement (one that is FINALLY moving toward a more realistic style of Shiraz that can be consumed rather than used for demi-glace) Ben Glaetzer: “Now in it's 6th release, the 2006 Amon-Ra shows the hallmark richness of the previous vintages yet takes the aromatic expression to another level. The slower ripening experienced in our Shiraz created parcels of fruit with huge intensity and perfume without any of the hot, jammy characteristics that can become evident with exposed fruit - a character we avoid in all of our wines at all costs. The key to Amon Ra is balancing the extraction rather than maximizing it. The fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the characteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them. The similarity has to be drawn between the 04 and 05 wines, the 06 showing the freshness and refinement of the 04 release with the tannin structure and ageability of the 05. It is certainly one of our most favored releases to this point.” VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as more than just a bottle of wine - the care and hard work of the winemaker is within the bottle ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly form the source with the finest provenance available (this wine is imported to the cold water port of Seattle and then comes to our temperature controlled warehouse - it is as close to the source as you can get in the US - no truck routes, cross-docks, store shelves or other - I stress this because it is significant and something we work very hard to ensure) 2006 Amon-Ra Shiraz Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus8777
