Community Tasting Notes (10) Avg Score: 92 points

  • High fill, good color. Popped and poured and the wine was still vibrant and fresh. Flavors were a tad muted but easily held on for the hour+ it took to finish the bottle. none of the tobacco, shoe leather etc you might get with a 45 plus year old Bordeaux. Delightful with aging still possible.

  • Right out of the gates this was a gracefully aged Rioja with lots of vivacity and power. At first only 92-ish pts as it did not show that clean and precise but the longer it sit in the glass the better it got. Ever-changing aromas popped up, the wine got fresher and fresher and more precise and with a seductive sweetness. Following aged Rioja over an evening has brought me many great wine experiences and positive surprises (not even considering the low prices you pay for these). This was another one. 95+ pts.

TN: Very intense, deep nose with lots of wet and dry earth, tobacco, licorice, a dark fruit core, some spices. Quite interesting, almost impenetrable. Same power and intensity on the palate with wet earth, wet fall leaves, dark dried fruit (less fresh than on the nose), cola and spices, crushed rocks. Some fresh pure sweetness towards the end and with more time in the glass. Super intense but as on the nose, only medium precision. Suddenly with more air, some coffee notes and fresher, sweeter, purer dark fruit appear. Ever-changing aroma profile and the wine improves and gets more precise by the minute. Fine structure with molten tannins, good, medium high and well-integrated acidity, very good tension, light but creamy texture. Overall quite balanced and harmonious and with medium length (but the nose and palate are more exciting).

Decanting: Not decanted but followed over 3 hours. This bottle would have needed 1h+ hours in the decanter.

  • Significantly declining now, showing a little oxidation and quite a bit of brown. However, it does bring lovely spice and fruitcake aromas to the table, and a beautiful silk mouthfeel. Still an enjoyable bottle and not a drop was wasted, but if you have any of this hanging around, it is definitely time to drink up.

  • This started off with a dry, dusty nose, and seemed distinctly tired and just holding on to life. But over the next hour or so it made an amazing transformation, shedding the dusty earthy nose and putting on some serious weight. The aroma went through a cedar phase first, then a little while later was eucalyptus, and later still it became vanilla. Lovely fruit, very mature but still quite vibrant, and a strong finish. Great juice.

  • Tasted blind. The nose is redolent of plum, dark chocolate, and blueberry ice cream. Blue fruit in the mouth, tannins are almost gone but the fruit is still playful. Tasty sweetness from maturity on the finish. Drink up.
