  • Popped and poured to accompany roast chicken. Darker ruby color. Nose of black cherry, damp cellar, violets, earth. Vibrant blueberry fruit on the richly-textured palate which quickly turned to more raspberry-like tartness with each sip. Satin mouthfeel with genuine depth and concentration. Freshening acidity and firm tannin buried by fruit. Long, satisfying finish of dark berry and earthy grip. Entering early adolescence and very impressive at this point.

  • Curiosity got the better of me, and I opened this 2005 Premier Cru. Medium colored center. Scents of reduction, black cherry, and anise. Not surprisingly, tight and nothing but structure right out of the bottle. Then over a few hours, dense, brambly red and blue fruit emerged with a sappy upfront feel and a surge of acidity, soot, and drying tannins at the end. This is a big, powerful wine for the Cote de Beaune, and it has plenty of material. Subtlety is not its strong suit. While it is not brutal now and there is pleasure to be had, let it sit for 7 to 10 more years to loosen and unlock it.

Second night-now some cooler mint aromatics and a lighter, more airy feel. Ah, some earth shows up as well-nice complexity. Only downside is a somewhat unexpected loss of fruit, although some low key red fruit does remain. I still read this as needing more aging, but maybe my time frame above was a bit too long.

  • Garnet color, translucent, and orange to the rim. The smells are raspberry, spice, cinnamon, sour cherry, and earthy notes. The tastes are sour cherry, earth, spice, clove, sweet, raspberry, tangy minerality, and vanilla. The tannins are fine dust and well integrated. The body is light and the finish is sour with just a hint of salinity.

  • DAWGS October 2012 - Pinot Noir from Anywhere (TexasZin's home in Garland, TX): WIML92

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Tight nose of perfume, leather, white pepper and berries. Flavors of berries, cherries and raspberries. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. I'd hold another year or two before trying again to see if the nose fills out a bit more.
