Definite funk on the nose upon opening. I don't really agree with he term barnyard, but whatever you call it, it was typical of an aged Bordeaux. It mostly blew off after a couple hours in the decanter. On the palate the wine was still youthful with plenty of fruit. Wonderfully balanced. It evolved over the course of the evening, with the last sip tasting sweet and fruity. We actually bought this at the château in 1999 and brought it home (to California) in our baggage. It was not in a proper cellar the first couple years, until I secured a good locker. It was not clear that the lapse caused any damage. This wine is definitely ready to drink now if you are ready for it. It may last longer, but no need to wait.
Getting better each year! Great barnyard nose (reminds me of standing in a neighbourhood farm when I was a kid, ) lots of deep and sweet and ripe (!) fruits in the nose and the palate, velvet texture. But a bit thin in the middle, decent length in the finish. Very good for a 1994 left bank, a real surprise, indeed one of the better 1994s. Decanting helpful. A great success for the vintage. Would buy this again if available for reasonable price or at auction, but no need to hunt for it. Drink before 2020.
my first '94, high fill, dark colours go into brick, banyard smell, after 1 hour decant the wine seems to develop the PL typical silky texture, still unpleasant in the nose, thin, only slightly better with more air, also on the palate, disappointing bottle

(Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) From magnum - dark red violet color; mushroom, leather and cedar nose; tasty, well structured, rounded cassis and red fruit palate; medium-plus finish (45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot)
(Chateau Pichon-Lalande Pauillac) Dark, deeply coloured, mature. An impressive nose, loaded with a super-sweet depth of smoky, meaty, blackcurrant nose. The palate keeps up appearances, with a wealth of big, sweet, glossy, creamy and textured fruit. Very accessible, voluptuous, although with a tannic backbone. Exotic. Balanced. Absolutely gorgeous wine. Approachable now, but with a little tannin still showing in the finish as well this has room for improvement yet.
