  • My expectations were high. Barolos are among my favorite wines, generally speaking. The 2003 vintage was 90 rated by RP, though there was great variation from producer to producer. This wine was quite disappointing. First, it showed great age. The color was pale brownish-red at the rim of the glass. Most of the fruit was gone. More acid than I like.

I'd describe the taste as "raisiny" with almost a sherry-like undertone. On the whole, not the blockbuster I was hoping for.

  • It's been about two years since I last tasted this wine and I still don't think it's bad. The nose is actually very nice, showing bright red cherries, spices and earth. I believe the problem is that it's out of balance on the palate. The combination of tart acidity and very strong abrasive tannins can overwhelm the fruit. I still find this wine enjoyably, although I would not buy it again.

  • I bought two bottles a year ago, drank one immediately, didn't enjoy it, forgot about the other. I came across it recently, corked it, and found it to be better than I remembered (nothing really memorable about it though), and worth the 5 bucks I think I paid for it at TJ's.

  • I don't know how to put it any other way but to say that this wine is just downright pretty bad. About the only thing it has going for it is a very brief and understated taste of nebbiolo fruit up front. Thin and largely tasteless, it lacks any semblance of complexity. Tannins are pronounced and crude. Acidity is also out of balance. I let it breath for about 3 hours to see if anything would develop and found that nothing did. I'd still not buy this again even at 5-6 dollars a bottle.

  • Light and gutless, would have rated higher if it wasn't labeled as a Barolo - but even if it was under the guise of a different varietal, wouldn't have been much higher. Goes to show that a $14 quality Barolo is too good to be true!
