| Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 15 notes) | | | Tasted by rcdyer on 6/9/2010 & rated 92 points: Excellent zin, with deep structure and nice pepper spice, both on the nose and on the tongue. I am going to see if any more is still available online. (124 views) | | | Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 4/14/2010 & rated 82 points: It was worth $12. But not more. (217 views) | | | Tasted by neurovino on 10/23/2009 & rated 89 points: With experience comes wisdom. Not as good as two years ago. Still excellent QPR. (450 views) | | | Tasted by dmatley on 4/11/2009 & rated 89 points: Definately improving but requires patience. The palate seems to be catching up with the color and weight as fruit is emerging and some of the odd stemminess is integrating. This is a huge wine that some day may live up to it's promise. (514 views) | | | Tasted by drdebs on 12/4/2008 & rated 91 points: This was pretty stunning--especially for $12. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry and tar. Lovely silky palate. Will definitely see what new syrah releases CH has, and if he is comparing any to lot 31. (618 views) | | | Tasted by rmsanz on 8/29/2008 & rated 89 points: Drank with Argentinian lunch. Good solid dark fruit. Would buy again. (663 views) | | | Tasted by dnaknc on 8/2/2008 & rated 89 points: Once again the CH wines prove well worth the bucks.. The fruit on this are quit palatable and pleasing.. (669 views) | | | Tasted by JimKay on 7/17/2008 & rated 89 points: Still quite nice. Black pepper nose, black fruits on the palate are little muted. (731 views) | | | Tasted by Acohen on 10/14/2007 & rated 90 points: Big, rich with dark fruit and almost some smoke. Nice finish and great nose (1309 views) | | | Tasted by JimKay on 10/13/2007 & rated 90 points: Gave this the one hour decant. Black pepper-Syrah nose jumps out at you. Deep, almost black color.Good Syrah, black fruit flaovrs that deepen as the wine sat open. Low acidity and tannins, but no flacid Australian style wine. Worth the modest cost, sorry it's all gone. (1402 views) | | | Tasted by Acohen on 9/27/2007 & rated 90 points: Luscious dark fruits with blackberry and plum on the palate and a long, smooth finish. A little hot but once it opens and airs out, it smooths nicely. (1394 views) | | | Tasted by WNissen on 8/21/2007: The alcohol printed on the label is 14.2%, 15.5% would be a violation of TTB labeling regulations.
I guess I do not care for the style of the Cameron Hughes wines, they are not over-oaked, mercifully, but this is the second red that's had one flavor note and noticeable alcohol. It's not jammy, just lacking in interest and finish. Fair+. (1505 views) | | | Tasted by neurovino on 7/14/2007 & rated 91 points: Wow, I really liked this for the price. Very rich color, mild on the nose with a hint of the pepper that expresses itself more on the tongue. Great combination of black pepper and fruit. Nice balanced finish. (1565 views) | | | Tasted by Acohen on 5/30/2007 & rated 89 points: Young and could use some more time in the bottle, but great dark fruits with a lovely nose of dark fruits, including blackberries, plums and a little bit of cocoa. The tannins are well integrated and not overpowering. Decanted and aerated the wine which helped immensely. Another great Lot! (1604 views) | | | Tasted by Steam67 on 5/22/2007: What a beast of a wine. Definitely will lay this down to see what develops. Decanted for two hours and tasted over 4 days. Dark brooding fruit with peppery notes that are accented by a flinty matchstick note on day two. Big tannins that still say hi late in the game, but overall a good drink. I'll bet time will be good to this one. (1570 views) |

Lot 31
Vintage: 2005
Appellation: Sonoma Mountain
Grape: 89% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre
Alcohol by volume: 15.5%
Production: 900 cases
Availability: Just Released!
Taste: Huge wine both on the nose and on the palate. Blackberry, cassis and white pepper aromas. On the palate plums, dusty earth and mocha are wrapped in soft, well-integrated tannins. This is a deep wine and as it opens up sweet fruits and black pepper notes emerge from the tannins. When I originally tasted this wine I thought it had much more new oak on it but, as it turns out, the entirety of the syrah component was aged for 18 months in 3rd fill barrels. It seems syrah is very sensitive to new oak tannins so a little goes a long way.
Cameron Confidential: Those of you familiar with Lot 12, 2003 Sonoma Mtn. Syrah will want to get a hold of this. From the same vineyard and almost a dead ringer. The mourvedre brings a hint of plumminess and lively acidity. As well, you might wonder what happened to the ’04 vintage so I’ll tell you. We absolutely loved the wine but the lab report came back with very low acidity which, while it could have been fixed, would probably suffered in quality nonetheless and we didn’t want to risk it. The ’05 is a welcome replacement even though we got less of it than we would have liked. The owner seems to be doing well with his brand and is holding back more and more each year. Theirs retails for $30 a bottle; you get it for $12 in our online store. There are only 100 cases available online and it’ll go quickly.
Pair this with some Osso Buco or grilled meats and finish with some dark
