  • Des arômes de fruits noirs, de graphite et de réglisse. Du fruits concentrés sur des tanins assez costaud et une finale un peu rêche. Ça s’estompe après qlq heures. À carafer ou garder qlq avant la prochaine bouteille. Présentement un peu too much.

  • Served @ rm temp with Stuffed Bell Peppers. Hearty, Full-bodied, will stand up to the heaviest entrèes. Fruity nose, prominent Blackberry and Tannin, satisfying lingering finish. I am appreciating this wine a little more than my initial impression. 87 Pts.

Tannat may be a bit of an acquired taste; something like Carménère, once prominent in Bordeaux (before being decimated by the phylloxera scourge), imported to Chile for their fledgling wine industry, thriving there and now predominant. But my preference in hearty, full-flavored wines runs more toward the Carménère, Blaufränkish, or a Saperavi.

  • Impulse Purchase @ Costco. Made from the Tannat grape, prominent in the Saint Mont Appellation in Gascony. Varietal is primarily grown in SW France and in Uruguay, where some consider it the national grape.

Served at room temperature (14.5% abv) with BBQ Pork Sandwiches. Initially I found the wine harsh & unpleasant; it‘ll be an easy tasting note to write, I thought.

Deep, clear, Plum Red on the pour. Black fruit on the nose, carrying over to the palate. Prominent, harsh, tannins, with a somewhat sour taste on the palate and short finish. “Complex flavors of blackfruits with subtle toasted notes, bitter chocolate and noble leather“ (their description), may be a bit too complex for me.

Finished the bottle the following day where my impression had quite improved. Still dense plum red in the glass with blackberry on the nose and palate. The tannins had mellowed and were not as prominent or harsh. The sour feeling had diminished, and the resulting finish was more pleasant.

Clearly not a wine you want to just ‘Pop & Pour,’ it should be opened prior to consuming, allowing some time for it to breathe and ‘open-up.’ 85 pts.
