Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.3 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 96 notes)

Tasted by DanSm on 8/16/2010 & rated 85 points: Soft tannins. More like a red blend than Cabernet. (271 views)
 Tasted by WG198 on 7/23/2010 & rated 89 points: (330 views)
Tasted by dchorton on 5/14/2010 & rated 87 points: (683 views)
Tasted by WG198 on 5/13/2010 & rated 90 points: A velvety smooth and enjoyable wine. Served as an aperitif and with grilled shrimp. Continued to improve over an evening and knocked the socks off Lot 76. Nice aroma, mild tannins and good taste of raspberries and cherry. (903 views)
Tasted by RussK on 4/17/2010 & rated 90 points: RUSSK Steak with LHF. Nothing bad about it. Med bodied. Some mature oak/dill notes. Smooth tannins. Easy drinking, if not compeling. Don't decant too long (2nd day dropped to 88). Drink up, it's not getting better. (1079 views)
Tasted by fwgolfpro on 4/13/2010 & rated 90 points: Opened another bottle to check my palate since tasting a few Napa Cabs the past few days. Still a shocker. This wine is just starting to show. Definitely meant for the long haul (Hard to imagine from a $10 wine!). Great stuff, and I thought it brought more to the table than Lot 149 which I tried earlier. Good things come to those who wait.  Tasted by fwgolfpro on 4/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Wow! This wine blew me away. Maybe I was expecting much worse, but this wine brought a lot to the table. The 100% new French oak really makes this wine. The fruit is a bit subdued, but the mouthfeel definitely makes up for it. You cant get a wine under $10 (Sam's) with this mouhfeel. It does have some green characteristics and does lack a little fruit on the palate, but it delivers in other ways. at 13.8% ABV, it reminds me of concentrated bordeauxs. Awesome wine with a mind boggling price. 100% new French Oak? Unbelievable.

Three days later this puppy is still going strong showing its guts for the future. After tasting an '07 Caymus cab and an '05 Phillipe Melka cab, Lot 35 still sings. I find it more intriguing than the Melka cab, with better integration of oak and tannin. Has that soft well water aspect that I love. Vegetal, but complimented by fruit. Great value. (1186 views)
Tasted by MystMrQ on 3/24/2010 & rated 82 points: Was hoping for better after letting this wine rest comfortably in my Eurocave for a couple of years. Tight and vegetal when first opened with fruit struggling to emerge. Long but tannic finish. Definitely recommend decanting before serving. As we didn't come close to finishing this bottle today, I'll check it again tomorrow and hope to have more positive things to say. (1344 views)

Tasted by Keno1957 on 1/27/2010 & rated 88 points: Full bodied smooth balanced very enjoyable (1938 views)
Tasted by philvk on 1/17/2010: Popped and poured- still a little cold from my cellar- Harsh tannins obscured any virture in the fruit for the first few min.. I am disappointed. But then the tannins receded dramatically, and a balanced, deep fruit driven wine emerged. This was rich, complex and enjoyable Calif fruit. Good structure, a long finish. Even headed to velvety after an hour. Quite enjoyable. I'd go 90 pts. (2005 views)
Tasted by redman77 on 1/6/2010 & rated 84 points: Decanted for half a day. Alcohol finally burned off. A light muted fruit tast. Lot 60 which is same vintage is drinking much better. I am still seeing some Lot 35 around but will pass. Drink up we could be in twilight of this wine. (2134 views)
Tasted by PatrickH on 12/25/2009 & rated 77 points: Very piney and green, even after a year of resting. Bad stuff :( (1996 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 12/22/2009 & rated 83 points: Hard time picking this out as a cab. Its really showing more like an Ausie Shiraz with stewed dark fruit flavors. Nice balance and pretty firm tannins. (2428 views)
Tasted by rrtims on 12/12/2009 & rated 85 points: Good. Rich, dark color. Slightly oaky flavor. (2457 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 12/10/2009 & rated 85 points: I thought this a little 'thin' for a Napa Cab ... it didn't hold up to the ribeyes. (2406 views)

Tasted by wordstar on 9/5/2009 & rated 88 points: Noticeable development versus the last bottle. Dark color, rich feel, moderate fruit, and average finish. More potential left. (3321 views)

Vintage: 2005
Appellation: Yountville District, Napa
Grape: Cabernet
Alcohol by volume: 13.8%
Production: 10,000 cases

Taste: Black color with purple rim. This wine is still an infant and just emerging from bottle shock. Wow! Distinctly different nose here. It will begin to flesh out and develop even more bottle bouquet over the next few months and change considerably over the next year. This wine has outstanding overall structure. Tight on the nose, showing hints of blueberry and blackberry with sweet prunes and hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, a dusty earth emerges with black cherries, currant, tea leaf and sage. Currant fruit and chocolate will emerge over time. Interesting mineral components linger throughout suggesting a more Bordeaux-like structure and long ageing potential. A brilliant, lingering finish offers well integrated tannins with a kiss of vanilla, white pepper and toasty oak. While drinkable now, this wine requires serious decanting. Clearly it's one for the cellar.

Cameron Confidential: Like Lot 34, this is grower wine with much of the same set of circumstances; grower contracts not renewed during the wine glut that started back in '01 and the grower is forced to make wine and bulk it out. High-quality, conscientiously made wines are imperative to sell against a much oversupplied bulk market. Like the Rutherford, this wine is made with entirely new 100% French oak. Yountville is five good miles south of Rutherford and considerably cooler with very different soil structures (volcanic loam for better drainage), resulting in wines of greater concentration, color, and fruit. The smaller degree temperature days contribute to a more Bordeaux-like structure. Think Pauillac. Significant vanilla and toast courtesy of new French oak. This wine will age easily another 10+ years.

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
