Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 82.4 pts. and median of 85 pts. in 50 notes)

Tasted by Wolfgang on 2/23/2010 & rated 90 points: Plum and forest floor on the nose, nicely balanced tannins over the tongue. This had some backbone and could have stayed in the cellar a couple more years. (390 views)

Tasted by MystMrQ on 1/2/2010 & rated 86 points: A good Napa cab- plum fruit with hints of bell pepper and cedar spice but definitely needs to be decanted. Drinking well now but likely to improve through 2012. Many CH wines need time to develop and this definitely one of them. (507 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 12/11/2009 & rated 85 points: It just didn't hold up to the steak. Hopefully his newer wines (I sat on this with the hope it would mature) will be bigger, otherwise ... you get what you pay for. I was hoping for a bargain, but it just didn't deliver. Maybe the other bottle ...? (592 views)
Tasted by knops on 10/6/2009 & rated 90 points: I like this. Mixed reviews so far. there might be a lot of bottle variation. This one tastes like a decent cab, tannic, but not too oaky. some fuit flavor. (775 views)
Tasted by unstrucksound on 8/18/2009 & rated 80 points: Disappointing compared to other Hughes Lots; the green, vegetal element is dominant -- nose and mouth, UNTIL I did the following: noting Hughes write-up that this has good tannins and an eye to aging, I let it sit until day two in the bottle, then ran it through my aerator a full four times, the equivalent of about 4-6 hours in the decanter. The wine then showed well: the green elements softened into a hint of smokiness in the background, and, surprisingly, the fruit AND tannins survived the aeration. Totally different wine now. Gone was the tartness, leaving sweeter cassis, vanilla, earth, and smoke. This 70 point gained a full 10 points.

If you have a bottle, don't be afraid to decant it for an entire day. (847 views)
Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 4/28/2009 & rated 68 points: Color: Medium red, not plum or maroon- is this really Cab.? Nose: Aromatic and spicy. A bit green and kind of minty. Taste: Dry, flat with a lingering green-ness. A second taste shows a broader palate, some plum and flat, red fruit. Not much else here...only a touch of heat. I threw this out without finishing the glass. Took the remains to a friend/wine distributor and he didn't like it either. Dumped the bottle. (1148 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 4/3/2009 & rated 86 points: Good red fruit but nothing spectacular (1163 views)
Tasted by camacu on 3/28/2009 & rated 80 points: nothing out of the ordiary...other CH Lots have been much better. Can't recall one this thin. I guess that's the chance you take, but I'm sure I'll gamble on another Lot down the road. (1233 views)
Tasted by rickerm on 3/28/2009 & rated 84 points: (998 views)
Tasted by payneclay on 1/11/2009 & rated 88 points: (1130 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 11/23/2008 & rated 86 points: solid but nothing special (1391 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 11/4/2008 & rated 85 points: (1191 views)
Tasted by cphd on 9/25/2008 & rated 90 points: (1179 views)

 Tasted by Adonisd1956 on 7/19/2008 & rated 87 points: (1333 views)
Tasted by carmenem on 7/13/2008 & rated 79 points: First bottle was corked. Second bottle respectable but not as good as other CH wines. (1665 views)
Tasted by JimKay on 6/16/2008 & rated 85 points: 85 point wine. Competently made, a bit thin. (1831 views)
Tasted by rickerm on 6/12/2008: Initially had a very tight noise. After sitting in the glass for a bit it began to open up with cherry candy smell. Balanced wine with a medium finish and medium to light feel in the mouth. (1886 views)
 Tasted by ZR1001 on 5/19/2008 & rated 86 points: (1624 views)
Tasted by EaglesWin on 3/30/2008 & rated 86 points: (1890 views)
Tasted by Philmck on 2/12/2008 & rated 81 points: 30 mins in glass: Bouquet = Tight nose, some red fruit with a faint raw beef in the background. Taste = sour cherries up front, hollow mid-palet, short tart finish. Mouthfeel = thin. After all that, not a terrible QPR but doesn't come accross as a Napa CS. (2539 views)
Tasted by 12voltman on 1/27/2008 & rated 83 points: Short finish, lighter taste. Opened up a bit after some air, but not as serious as Lot 35 or 55. Not bad, but not spectacular either. (2621 views)
Tasted by BrianV on 1/13/2008 & rated 82 points: Not a bad bottle, but not much to celebrate. Not too fruity, quite tannic, and a little sweet taste. Very ordinary. (2616 views)
Tasted by neurovino on 1/10/2008 & rated 80 points: Not sure how this wine can be so offensive to ppl. To me it was simply a watered down version of what a cabernet should be: very light nose, color, and flavor. I didn't get vegetable, or more than just a little green. I didn't find it offensive, either, Just barely worth the effort. Absolutely no drama here. Wouldn't buy again. But I've certainly had worse for the price. (2766 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
