  • Medium to dark garnet colour, heavy sediment. Good, intense red and dark fruit, red currant, red cherry, blueberry, blackberry, plum, meaty notes, chocolate, tobacco, complex spice notes, and light herbaceous notes, with pronounced acidity, partly resolved tannin, and great persistence. Kept developing. Needed an hour in a decanter to show its best, and was consistent on day two. Medium-bodied, and well-structured, with good concentration and very good complexity. That said, the tannin is lightly sandpapery and lightly dry, and the wine remained a little rustic over the course of both days. Should smooth out with another three to five years. Pair it with a steak for now. 92(?)

  • Surprisingly good. Excellent, even. In exactly the right place. Showing mature notes but still fruited. A real treat!

  • Absolutely wine of the night. Had a wine enthusiast friend over for this bottle and his comment after the first sip summed it up nicely, "ooooh, this is very fine".

I was worried popping off the capsule bc the cork was absolutely covered with a think carpet of mold. It seemed to have penetrated the cork 2/3 of the way through- making it completely black almost to point where the wine soaked through. But the color was a beautiful ruby without the slightest bit of bricking. Poured off some very well behaved sediment which remained stuck to the side of the bottle into a narrow decanter and drank without any resting.

The aromas were absolutely intoxicating- still with some fresh fruit of dark raspberries, blackberries, plum, along with the classic aromas of cedar, graphite, pencil shavings, loose tobacco, and tilled earth.

The palate was magnificent, silky, intense in flavors but remaining light and silky. Like the nose, the fruits were present, but not dominating. There was such a great complexity of fruits, tobacco, earth, wood, cigars, leather, graphite, pencils, old books etc, that it was a bit overwhelming trying to pick them all out. Eventually I gave up and just enjoyed the experience.

The wine was beautiful right out of the bottle. We enjoyed it over 2 hrs, and it lasted, but did not gain anything from the air time. In fact, the wine felt a bit fragile in that it was starting to turn just a touch sour right at the end.

  • Big Bordeaux XIV (Kevin and Vicki's): Pop and pour. This was a fun and interesting wine. I got the distinct taste of blood in it. Also, some kind of janitorial closet thing on the nose. Neither of those 2 things were negative IMHO. Other than that, it was a great old world well-aged Bordeaux.

  • Big Bordeaux XIV: Featuring 1982 and 1990 (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Very dark red/purple color. This had been open for maybe 1-2 hours, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Bonus bottle from Tom -also acquired on release. A very good '86, which as a vintage I've generally very much liked. Dark, framboise, cassis, blackberry pie, bramble, dark chocolate, nice tannins. In very good shape and fit in nicely as a transition from the 82's to 90's.
