Definitive Bordeaux (Mirabelle Restaurant Austin, Texas): More to the nose, less to the palate than the 1966, this was a smooth, nicely balanced wine which "even has a little finish." A leaner, lighter style than the 1966, the 1985 Pape Clement had a "gorgeous" and "stunning nose," with one discerning taster identifying cinnamon, clove, all-spice, and rosemary, and another sour cherry and pencil/wood shavings. Remember when you had to change out the pencil sharpener shavings at school? Additional flavors of fruit, peppercorn, spices ("a cornucopia of"), black currant, and dark cherries were noted. "Good time 2B drinking this," "very 85," "damp forest floor," "lighter style," and "perfect example": this wine had its proponents. Billy said he was glad 2B here today. Thank the french pope.
Lunch-time tasting at Nicolas and Sandrine's; 2/20/2010-2/21/2010 (Paris, France): Un bouchon impossible à retirer, filtrage obligatoire...Robe trouble aux reflets bruns dans le fond du verre, arômes fragiles, qui se transforment rapidement, du sous-bois à la torréfaction, café, avec une note brûlée. L'apogée est derrière nous, tout le monde l'a noté mais c'est encore très fin, nous ne le déclarons pas mort !
What a wonderfull nose. Stone and gravel, cherries and lacorice. The first 2 gulps was nice as well, but then it died. This was over the top, but aged with beauty. Very drinkable but should have been drunk 5 years ago.
Opened on Superbowl Sunday. Cork was soaked nearly to the top and the nose was not really there. Taste was very green with very little finish. Either this was a bad bottle or this wine is well past its prime. No rating.
Bordeaux on the Hudson (Peter Pratt's Inn): An interesting wine if not particularly enjoyable. It had the nose of a sweeter wine, but this was bone dry. There was a little nuttiness that spoke to a slight oxidation. I'm assuming that all that's left here is Semillon. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

(Chateau Pape-Clément Pessac-Léognan) Dense, pure, surprisingly youthful colour. Very classic nose, with good fruit. Open and expressive, meaty, gloriously accessible. This is early maturity. Powerful, smooth, pure, fluid mouthfeel. Firm sweet fruit backed up by plenty of tannic structure. Floral aromatics. Lovely wine, with great potential.
(Chateau Pape-Clément Pessac-Léognan) This is a dark red wine with a tawny hue. Stylish nose, full of fruit with some toffee character. Very firm and muscular on the palate, with sweet, tarry fruit. Great tannins which lie in the background providing structure. Good acidity. Well balanced.
