  • Private Dinner (New York, NY): On opening, whiffs of cedar and earth followed by bright red fruits, with sweet, tart cherries and rocking acidity on the palate. After two hours, a black cherry aroma and flavor dominates, accompanied by truffle, dried violets, and of course damp earth and dried leaves. Slight candied strawberry on the finish. This shows no sign of age, and is in fact far more primary than the 1998 I've had on a few occasions over the last year. Rated 2 on a scale of -1 to 3.

  • The nose on this wine offers superb freshness, especially for the vintage, with it's notes of tarragon, leather, cigarette smoke and hints of cocoa cookie dough. This opens a bit tough on the palate with grippy tannins though lovely acidity. The texture is quite Burgundian and while the midpalate offers up tons of red berry fruit there is not much complexity or length. Still a bit too youthful this should add both in due time. 2011-2018

  • Lovely but fading. Dry leather at first open, it responded to air and came alive for an hour and a half before starting to decay a bit. Really enticing aromas and flavors of leather and shoe polish with overripe, at-the-cusp-of-oxidized, slightly sharp, cherry fruit. Very much a seductive older woman, an analogy I might want to avoid given my advancing age. Not a good wine for those in search of a quickie, but as Janis said, "get it while you can."
