  • Dinner at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): It's a strange mix, this vintage and the Jouan style. This has more of a black fruit character as well as a little bit of brown spice. Tannins still show on the finish, and this has some of the same rusticity as other Jouans I've had in that the fruit is a little muddled. A touch of spice as well.

  • PopnPour, tasted over 3 hrs
    -dark red mild bricking
-low profile dark fruit black cherry stony iron stewed tomato mature elements
-med acidity, med- weight yet sappy mid-palate with low profile black cherry iron earth slight bitter edge on respectably long finish with med- tannic structure
-nice transparency with evident Morey elements and '05 balanced darker fruit profile just starting to turn with mature elements, serious and elegant, punching above its appellation, this bottle is squarely on its optimal plateau now but no hurry

  • Dinner at Nathan's House (Nathan's House - Chicago, IL): Still drinking in a really good spot. Beautiful aromatics filled the glass with dried rose petals, underbrush, mushroom and dry-aged beef. The aromas alone were intoxicating. There's no question, to me, that qualitatively this wine hits well above the village level. The body of the wine was quite light, but the flavors were intense. Great red fruit, florals, mushroom and minerals combine together seamlessly. Great stuff.

  • Incredibly rustic nose filled with dry-aged beef, wild flowers, sweet cranberry and spices. The palate was incredibly silky with airy tones of dried red florals, underbrush, cranberry, tomato paste, and exotic spices. I read recently of a buying strategy that suggests drinking the "lighter-styled" producers in the big years offers up a great opportunity - and this encapsulates that idea. Jouan's house style meshes incredibly well with this bigger vintage very well.

  • A bit oaky and smoky initially with a notable tobacco note, evolved into a more typical pinot register with some green herb and somewhat anonymous dark fruits - in the mouth some roundness upfront, again anonymous through the midpalate then piercing acidity on the finish. Will revisit tomorrow but at this point no great shakes though it should improve in the cellar. On day 2 the nose shows admirable purity of fruit, gentle herb laced zingy berries, and the mouth resolves into a much more classic, finesseful, elegant expression but there is not much complexity though one gets the sense that things are improving and will continue to improve over the next 7-12 years. My 87 is a shade low today but very much in the area so It will remain.
