(255 views) | | | Tasted by unstrucksound on 8/11/2009 & rated 87 points: My first of the Cameron Hughes wines, picked up in Taiwan for a very good price, relatively speaking. Nice watermelon and cherry on the nose, a hint of fresh garden leaves, nothing as strong as mint, but pleasant; decent mouthfeel with more cherries, and a very pleasing acidity, finished better as it opened up; a good wine and a very good QPR. Well done. Winery says: Vintage: 2006; Appellation: Campo de Borja, Spain; Grape: Rosé of Garnacha (Grenache); Alcohol by volume: 14%; Production: 7,000 cases; Release date: June 28, 2007; Availability: June 2007. Taste: Gorgeous ruby red color. Aromas of watermelon, strawberry and white pepper. Tastes like a watermelon jolly rancher candy but finishes dry and crisp. This Rosé is juicy with oodles of watermelon, strawberry and raspberries that greet you right up front. Excellently structured with some nice depth here, a little touch of white pepper lingers on the finish. This wine calls for summer BBQ’s filled with grilled vegetables, seafood and great for picnics! Even in the hot tub! When planning this project with our international sourcing winemaker, I thought for sure we would want to focus on Southern France, mainly Provence and Tavel. He indicated that the best Rose’s in his opinion were coming from Spain but that he would put together samples from a variety of producers in both areas. When we lined them all up the clear winners were the wines from the Campo de Borja region of Spain and the best of the bunch comprises Lot 37. The wine is made saignee, meaning juice is bled off of crush to concentrate the flavors, and is 100% Garnacha (Grenache). It’s hard to offer comparative pricing as Rose is such an emerging category here in the states. If you plug this wine into the traditional importer/distributor model you are looking at a price in between $16 and $19, you get it for $10.

Rosé wines vary from just pink to almost raspberry juice red in color, and can be referred to as rosé, pink or blush wines. Rosés are made from black grapes, but don’t fully turn red because the grape skins are removed from the juice mere hours after contact. This brief contact with the grape skins gives the wine a pink color from the slight transference of red pigments from the skins. Rosés can also be made by blending together white and red wines, but this is not very common outside of champagne. This brief skin contact also ensures that a minimal amount of tannins enters the wine. Adapted from Winegeeks website.

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
