A bit rough on the attack with lots of concentration but rather hard tannins. The mouthfeel is pleasant at first, there is copious lush fruit, however the finish shows heat and rough tannins, a certain lack of balance. My impression is so different from David Schildknecht’s (who wrote «absence of heat ») that I am questioning whether I had a representative bottle. 86-88 pts at most, a far cry from David’s impression.
1 an. The blend is 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 15% Mourvedre and the wine sees half in new barriques. On the nose this shows serious, massive cassis and blackberry fruit, melted licorice, raw meat and graphite notes that just keep coming and there's real ripeness and fruit intensity here.. This leads into a full bodied palate that's balanced, concentrated and possesses a creamy, silky texture that carries into a medium to long finish. A wow wine and now I just need to find out where I can get some of this. Reminded me a bit of mulled wine. Some cloves and cinnamon, with a black olive thing. All other flavors were seondary to one dominant nose and flavor. OK with goat cheeses, salad and dinner, but the shocker was how this wine excelled with dark chocolate with cacao nibs. A completely unexpected, but welcome pairing. It removed the rustic flavors and intensified the fruit aspects (red cherry) - interesting. This bumped my score up a point. Very acidic, slightly tannic. Took a little while to open up, but it really is a great bottle of wine. A little tanny/spicy on the end. (1234 views) | | | Tasted by duffer8008 on 11/21/2007 & rated 93 points: Very nice bottle of wine. Beautiful lavender, strawberries and a floral component on the nose. Nice lush complex mouthfeel with a ton of strawberries and flowers on the palate. This wine is drinking very well right now, but in a couple of years I think this wine could be a 94+ wine. (1279 views) |
