  • Blackberries, rhubarb, black pepper and olives. A shy nose, but revealed some nice treats with a bit of coaxing. Sweet fruited in the mouth, with grippy, slightly drying tannins. Elegant new world cool climate Syrah. Drink up, I think. (92 Very good wine)

  • Poor organisation meant that I cracked open this bottle to have with a steak as soon as the wine arrived in the post...mistake...Savoury, meaty, peppery and earthy with a muted blackberry and liquorice shadow. The palate is very much a reflection of the nose, tannins are present but quite silky and the alcohol is a bit intrusive for me. Stuck the rest under argon and will attend to it in a week or so.

Ha! So much for a week. Grabbed this tonight. The fruit is far more to the fore, at closer to cellar temperature the alcohol is less intrusive and the tannins a little grittier especially on the back of the palate. A considerable improvement.

  • Good nose of black fruit with a little tar and black olive. Similar on the palate but dryer than expected with some wet cement thrown in. Short, parched finish makes it better with food than without.

  • My notes are not that different other than now 3+ years later and a little bit softer...not a fruity wine and lots of spice

  • Impenetrable ruby. Despite the 10 years, almost more purple left in it than red signs of age. A lot of complexity to the nose. Pepper dominates at first, but gives way to red and black cherries, violets, and spice. Powdery fine tannin, weighty body, flavour bursting with juicy sweet fruit, with some gamey complexity adding to the interest. Still very primary, but already excellent. Although it has a bit of alcohol, it seems in balance with the acid, and the tannin structure is such that I expect this will develop into an even more interesting wine with time. Very good length. Demands attention but still highly drinkable (95 Superb wine)

(Bilancia La Collina) Bilancia Dear Friends, If you enjoy Ogier’s Belle Helene, this is something that should perk your interest - at a great deal less/bottle. If you are looking for top 2005’s to put in your 10 or 20 year retrospective of the vintage, this would be an enticing entrant and it is one of the finest versions of Syrah produced in the world. We’ve become an unsponsored spokesperson for Bilancia and I stand behind their effort as one of the most inspiring in the Southern Hemisphere. Like Bindi, this is a winery trying to play on a world stage and the results justify the immense hype they’ve garnered in New Zealand and beyond. I have no doubt that if this wine were produced in the Rhone, it would be at least 2-3 times this price and it’s hard to imagine a Cote Rotie hungry crowd enjoying a wine more than the La Collina. In New Zealand, Bilancia “La Collina” is uttered in the same breath as Chave Hermitage and Guigal La Turque and New Zealanders are duly proud of this winery, considered to be the very best in the country. While the Chave references may be a little far-fetched, what is certainly apparent is that this small, terraced hillside vineyard in Hawke’s Bay (North Island) may well possess some of the world’s finest soil and overall terroir for the showcase of Syrah’s exotic individuality and varietal strength. Bilancia makes two versions of Syrah, the regular Syrah and the La Collina. The regular Syrah is a top wine in its own right and a terrific bargain - we’ve offered the last three vintages. Its feminine, pepper-laced and silk-filled palate are memorable enough and have caused ripples around the US but the La Collina takes things to an entirely different level of tannin, gritty extract and perfume (think Guigal Brune et Blonde vs. single vineyard). The 2004 La Collina put this wine on the international map and it has been compared to the very best terroir-focussed Syrah in France. That was 2004 and this is 2005, a vintage that has the masses in New Zealand ready to explode like a firecracker. It’s not stretching things to say the 2005 La Collina we offer below is about as anticipated a wine as I can remember from New Zealand. Can it live up to the immense expectations? Only you can decide but I’m fairly sure I know the answer... For more information on this wine, please see: http://www.bilancia.co.nz/lacollina.html While quite expensive by New Zealand standards, this wine justifies it’s lofty tarrif with an individual and age worthy personality that is a guiding light not only in New Zealand's experimentation with Syrah but should be studied by other nations in their quest to express the varietal and its attributes - not just concentration and oak. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for extreme rarity, intensity and expression of site place. We have an exceptional price on this wine, about the same as in New Zealand. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance (only 20 cases for the entire US). 2005 Bilancia Syrah “La Collina” . If you desire more than 3, please let us know and we will add additional bottles on a first come first served basis (if we have single bottles left over after the initial allocations). Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA NZ6200
