  • Aromas of forest floor, mushroom, dried cherry and a hint of sulfur. Flavors of dried cherry, currant, earth and dried herb. Ends with a 20-25 second finish with earthy notes.

  • Bought this as a birth-year wine for the hubby's 60th Birthday. I have little/no experience with old Bordeaux wines and almost nothing to compare to (save a 50-year-old Barolo a few years back), so the approach was of no expectations and just see what shows up.

Brought this to the restaurant ahead of time and asked them to decant it an hour before our reservation. When we showed up, the bartender (the restaurant has a good wine program but apparently no Somm anymore given the times) gave me a dubious look in re the wine. Had a sniff and sip at the bar -- nose was full on musty cupboard age, and the first swirl and sip was rather thin with almost no fruit. I was a bit worried. When they brought the wine to table in hour 2, happily it had opened up some with a fairly strong grassy aroma, which I wasn't expecting. By hour 2.5, she had opened up and settled in like an elegant old-ish dame, versatile enough and happy to play nice and get along (with everything from the farmers plate of grilled veggies and burrata, to braised pork cheeks, and the pasta with rabbit sausage). With quite a bit of air, you could now taste the fruit that was still there (though I was not able to distinguish the blacks from the reds anymore), and she still had a pretty good backbone. Not a scene-stealer, but a lovely smooth reassuring companion for the evening. Probably still has some noble life ahead.

  • Not a great bottle with a mid shoulder fill and was expecting to pour this down the drain. However while the nose was a bit off, the wine was showing a transparent garnet in the glass without any browning. On the palate fully resolved tannins but good freshness and acidity joining the remaining dark fruit. Nice 60 yr old Bordeaux, and should be even better from better bottles...

  • I just love Bordeaux. Where can you find wines from 1962 that are still alive and in decent form. 1962 was not even a top vintage like 1961. The nose here was dominated by mushroom and vacherin cheese with dried fruit and leather. Excellent palate still, good energy and balance of tannins, acidity and fruit.

  • Still reasonably lively, the 62 Canon shows a raspberry, cherry nose with clay and sous-bois accents. This is a pleasant, mature St Emilion that requires consumption now.
