  • A sensational Volnay with prototypical cherry, floral and spice and then layers of forrest floor and herbs that are the gift of 30+ years of cellaring. So seamless, refined, fresh and buoyant on the palate -- silk in the glass. This is in an awesome spot.

  • Served double blind. An intense, aromatic nose with a pleasant red-fruited tone and a modest amount of earthiness coupled with some iron notes (which had me thinking Gevrey). Not much discernible oak, this is clearly a wine made in a light-touch sort of manner. The ripe fruit on the palate and the way this seemed pretty resolved had me thinking this was a 2002 (or less likely a 1999 due to the tannins). I couldn't figure a Gevrey producer that made wine in this sort of style and eventually settled for a relatively neutral expression from Jadot. Go figure.

  • Lafarge and d'Angerville study (Chicago, IL): The stylistic contrast between this and the Chênes is very stark. This is the lighter, more red-fruited and more perfumed of the pair. Some at the table initially detected a hint of VA on the nose, but I didn't pick it up. I did find the aromatics on this far more lifted and high-toned, and frankly, very alluring. At first, the palate felt a little dilute and the fruit faded out, but again the few hours of air really helped this wine blossom and realize more of its potential. There's a little herbal quality here that I really enjoyed as well. Between the three bottles of 1993s, I was waffling on which was my favourite the whole evening.

  • 1993 Red Burgundy Horizontal: Great nose indicative of the domaine with a rustic and dusty bouquet of soily red berry fruit. No brett, but great farm aromas, leathers, terroir. This palate is nicely balanced with developed red berry fruit. Good earthy texture. Still vibrant.

  • Beautiful nose that got better and better with air. Elegant and balanced Volnay. Not tannic like many 93s; will hold for a long time.
