These old Pax wines are typically wonderful. This one is good, but not great. The tannins are going to outlive the rest of the wine. Dried black cherry and blackberry fruit are a bit tired compared to the tannic underbelly that is still quite prominent. Roasted game, spicy cedar, and a rich earthy element add complexity. The wine is quite nice with intense flavors, but a bit unbalanced.

Classic Pax at peak with a pronounced nose, medium to full body, with plenty of fruit and savory, cool climate complexity oozing from every pore. A total syrah experience to serve with game or just by itself. I bought several cases of Pax direct back in the day and pick up stray bottles when I see them -- this particular bottle being one of the best performances of all time. The wax seal did its job here, I think this might have even had a touch of rubbery/reduction at the outset in addition to all the gamey, smokey, peppery Syrah goodness. Balanced for a long, tapered finish. Enough structure to last a few years more.
