I was wrong in my last tasting note on this wine (I think it was 3 years ago). I had said that I felt like it did not have a long life left, but this baby is just motoring along and seems to be continuing to improve.
This is an amazing BC wine, but very pricey for what you get (The bottle looks impressive, though). The nose is relatively powerful, jumping out of the glass. It seems to die down a bit after an hour or so, and needs some swirling to bring it back. Notes of spice, dark fruit. A still a little hot with nice flavors of slightly tart black cherry. Tannins are smooth and the finish is long. This baby has legs! I would say it could probably use another 3 years in the cellar.
Clear dark purple in color. Clean nose of cassis, floral, and some spice. Dry, med acidity, med body, tannins still strong, cassis, some leather, and spice on palate. Nice finish. Nice wine but over priced.
14.0% - Clear, med to deep garnet / clean, pronounced intensity - blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, torrefied coffee, pastry finish / dry, med+ acidity, full body, high tannin, med+ intensity, med to long length. This needs to breath so bad... in the decanter and let's see in an hour.
Even though this went perfectly well with braised veal cheeks in cocoa sauce, I feel like I've opened that one at least 10 years too early. This is as big as I was expecting it, but it still feels pretty young. Given I have the feeling I've opened this one too early, maybe it's an unfair judgement to say that it doesn't live up to the expectation of the price tag with their Compendium delivering for +/- half the price of the Oculus. Unfortunately, this was the one and only and will not have chance to crack another one in a decade from now... 89 now (probably + in the future)
