Fine showing from this bottle, which is situated in its early maturity phase. Would like to revisit in approximately 1 decade to let more tertiary components develop.

1998 Bordeaux Horizontal - London (Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street, London): Blueberry coulis, damp earth and some autumn leaves mark the nose on pouring this beaut. Later a subtle nutmeg character emerges. Palate is cool fruited and correct and whilst it lost our for me in the wine of the night voting this was a very hard decision - some of the other wines that scored similarly just had 1% more Wow factor on the night.

Commanderie dinner. Very complex tertiary notes, forest floor. Elegant, but a little light even for a 1998 Pomerol. Very popular tonight. In its prime. Drink up.

I was going to bring the 1989 La Conse but pulled the 1998 instead from the fridge. Didn't realize it until the wine was revealed at the end. I couldn't fully identify my wine during the blind tasting because I was thinking of the 1989 and this had very little in common with it. A bit diluted, very tertiary for a 1998, with none of the sexiness of the 89 or 90. I believe this period was a difficult one for the chateau and since then they have turned it around. A disappointing wine given the price point. Even at a higher price either the 89 or 90 is a much better wine to buy and consume now.

(La Conseillante) Nose of stony minerals and pure concentrated cassis/plum fruit. Ethereal and elegant on the palate like Conseillante always is with a great backbone of stony minerality and acidity. Wonderful freshness. Tremendous structure and one for the long haul. Not the most friendly wine at this stage but offers enormous potential.
(Château La Conseillante) Perfumey, lavender nose; fabulous, seamless, roses, berry, black fruit palate with great structure and sweet tannins; long finish

Double decanted and followed over 2-3 hours. Forest, sweet fruit. Elegant and drinking well at present, though no rush for a well-stored bottle.
