What a pleasant surprise. I pulled this with zero expectation. I had a just "ok" outing with this wine in 2009, and by all accounts, it should've been over the hill by now.
It is not. Poured into a Burg glass - expressive aromatics. The obvious question becomes "how does it taste". Well, it performs like a well-behaved, lower alcohol, aged Shiraz from Oz. Gone since I last tasted this in 2009 are the overt notes of scorched earth. Instead, a well-balanced syrah with residual oak that compliments rather than intrudes on the overall flavor profile. A pop of acidity keeps this "refreshing". For my taste, this is probably drinking at its peak, CT tasting windows be damned. Passive storage since purchase back in 2007 or so. A welcome surprise.
For anybody out there who still has this in their cellar, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. This has morphed from a South African idiosyncrasy (too much oak / smoke) to something that could perform as something of a ringer in a syrah tasting.

Some blackberries, soy, tar and earth on nose. Palate is completely lame. Doesn't have any weight. Almost nothing going on. Super short finish. Barely any berries. Not exciting at all.

South African in its presentation. Smoky, scorched earth fruit on both nose and palate, especially right after opening. A lot of this blows off with 30 minutes in the glass. The nose develops a bit of brown sugar / molasses that carries to the medium weight palate, where some light tire rubber (Bulgari Black) comes and goes on the finish, which is a bit short.
