Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 35 notes)

Tasted by pepeelvis on 2/3/2010: nice medium full body red, very food friendly. Drinking well and should hang on for at least a few more years. (110 views)
Tasted by HRS on 1/9/2010 & rated 86 points: Decanted for an hour.Have tried numerous times since buying in 03 and this was the first disappointment.LIght smokeyness has been replaced by overpowering menthol that only works better with food (Thai).

Tasted by french16 on 9/8/2009 & rated 84 points: At Oviedo, Buenos Aires.
Heavy, cloying, lacking acidity, this 2002 is simply boring. Too much concentration, fruit bomb, licorice.
Very disapointing. (506 views)
Tasted by Armando B on 6/14/2009 & rated 93 points: Fantastic. Decanted for an hour. Dark and red fruits in a medium to full bodied package. Oak well integrated and tannins resolved. Nice fig and very light menthol note. Seems to be at absolute peak. Definitely exceeded expectations. (680 views)
Tasted by luvcards on 1/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Much better than the one we tried in 2005. Perfect time to drink. (954 views)
Tasted by rmodak on 9/27/2008 & rated 90 points: Blind guesses included Aglianico, Priorat and even Amarone. This is a testament to the ripe roasted quality of the black cherry, with loam, graphite and firm tannins. Initially, a bit of reduction was noted, but blew off with aeration. It was very well liked and I think typical of the style of this producer. (1013 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 5/8/2008 & rated 92 points: WS 91 in 04. (766 views)
Tasted by TDV on 4/10/2008 & rated 91 points: (1206 views)
Tasted by astrauss on 1/1/2008 & rated 82 points: I love this producer and I typically love this wine but this bottle was very very tight and closed. Initially I thought perhaps a bit flawed or corked but after another 12 hours it opened up just slightly. I think this has shut down hard right now and this is just not enjoyable to drink right now.  Tasted by mimik on 10/27/2007 & rated 92 points: Montreal Monster Wine Tasting @ Chez Christophe; 10/26/2007-10/27/2007: This was my 2nd WOTN. There was something really unique about this wine but I could not put my finger on it. An intriguing nose of freshly cut figs and blackcherries with more of the same on the palate framed by smokey oak notes. Lovely finish and texture in the mouth. The wine with the most character of the night, IMO. Again, young but approachable now. (2393 views)
Tasted by vinaigre on 10/26/2007 & rated 92 points: Montreal Offline: Monster wine tasting (Restaurant Chez Christophe's): Deep ruby red. Nice nose of oak, vanilla, raspberries and red meat. Nice body and a very nice balance. Nice medium plus finish. (1640 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 10/10/2007 & rated 91 points: very dark dense and inky. alcohol oak dark yummy fruit like black cherries and blueberries with vanilla. Has a savory finish. A huge nose that keeps on opening up. Concentrated and lush with a berry and mineral note. 38 per. malbec. 37 per. cab sauv. A little rough and grippy with a long lean finish. Still huge and disjointed, it needs several more years to come together. (767 views)
Tasted by yui on 7/30/2007 & rated 88 points: OK drank in Montauk (2309 views)
Tasted by losvinhos on 7/23/2007 & rated 91 points: Ruby escuro. Excelente. (2600 views)
Tasted by jivey on 7/7/2007 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Very interesting wine, a very wet earth/tabacco with a huge core of dark fruits, finished with a tar and violets. I enjoyed the wine what was confused by the flavor profile, after looking at the bottle noticed it was almost equal parts Malbec, cab and merlot. The malbac makes it very interesting, though I would love to try a cab/merlot blend from them. Also did not go with a simple Steak dinner, the wine is better on its own. (2357 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/30/2007 & rated 89 points: WIML89,PURPLE87,NOWA,WS91

Tasted May 30, 2007 at home. Opened and splash decanted right before serving in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Started off tight on the nose giving way to some aromas of dark fruits at first then some black currants, black berries, plums, cocoa and sandalwood. Flavors of Bing cherries, black berries and plums. Light to medium acidity, firm tannins and medium body. Drink with at least an hour in the decanter or hold. (2883 views)
Tasted by Kamikaze on 5/30/2007 & rated 91 points: Very good wine, ready (after 1 hour decanting) and will last for at least 3 more years. Like a good bordeaux. On the nose, red berries and vanilla. (2367 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 5/12/2007 & rated 90 points: South of the Equator Wines (Farpointe Cellar): A very good nose of boysenberry and raspberry, mixed with a bit of vanilla. The palate was smooth and showed a lot of minerality along with dark fruit, and some floral notes. The finish was very good. (2677 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/11/2007 & rated 90 points: WIML90,WS91. No formal notes, just popped and poured with family. Solid little wine, one of the better one's I've had from Argentina recently. I'd recommend it and will likely buy a couple more for short term consumption. (2946 views)
Tasted by trankin on 4/14/2007 & rated 91 points: Very nice wine, drinking very well now, but will age several more years. No notes taken. (2810 views)
Tasted by silton on 1/6/2007 & rated 91 points: The best wine I drank in Patagonia, at Toma. $60 US in a restaurant is no bargain, but after 40 minutes in the glass this complemented mi lomo de la noche muy bueno. Si, por supuesto.

I thought I could make out the blend (Malbec/Cab/Merlot), for better or worse, with grilled, tobacco, and plush red fruits all apparent. Perhaps they weren't integrated but they did work well enough together in parallel. This bottle had depth and character. 90-91 points from memory.

Wine lists in Argentina are priced intelligently, in that there are many cheap bottles, only some of which are bargains, so if you don't want to risk that, US$ 50 becomes a safe haven. Given that a killer steak was US$10-15, the overall value was great. PS Torrontes is pretty cool, but Argentine Chardonnay has a long way to go. (3167 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/30/2006: Glorious deep ruby. Ripe wild berries and bacon on the nose with wonderful intensity. I think this gets the nose of the night. Nice mixture of power and elegance. The palate takes a cue from the nose – powerful tannin promises a long life. This wine is super. (18.5) (3901 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 4/8/2006 & rated 88 points: Around the World in 12 Wines (Farpointe Cellar): Deep ruby. A very interesting nose of raspberry, plum, spice, graphite, and vanilla, all equally present. The palate was tasty with berries, spice, and oak. The finish was long, with solid tannins. A good wine, but not for the price. (4358 views)
Tasted by Bill in Chicago on 4/5/2006 & rated 90 points: Nice. Good appearance, good aroma, just a little light in the flavor department, but still nice. Smooth, soft and not over done. Not too oaky. Easy to drink. I think it's a little different because of the 38% Malbec. Good value at the $27 price point.
Color = 2/2, Aroma 5/6, Flavor 4.5/6, Overall 4.5/6 = 16/20 or X2.5 plus 50 = 90 (3957 views)

The winery became at 1998 based on two principles: search for the highest quality in all their products and respect the concept of terroir. With this principles they bought Finca Altamira, Finca Bellavista, Finca Mirador and Finca Diamante; in different types of soils in the best lands of Mendoza. The product line starts with a special Malbec, a blend called Quimera and then the special products of the “fincas”.

About red wine
Wines of Argentina

Argentina has been making wine since the 1500s, tracing its wine heritage back to Spain, France and, perhaps surprisingly, Italy. Italian immigration is second only to Spanish in Argentine culture, and the flavors of Italy show up strongly in the nation’s wine, food and cultural tradition. Historically, Argentina has kept much of its wine consumption at home, drinking most of the wine it makes. But we are now seeing more very serious Argentine wines north of the border, and Malbec is leading the movement. The wine-making region in Argentina ranges between the 22° and 42° South latitude. It spreads at the foothills of the Andean mountain range along over 2,400 km; from the province of Salta to the province of Río Negro, with a variety of climates and soils that makes each region a unique land. In general terms, the areas dedicated to vine cultivation are dry and arid with a low level of rain and humidity, determining factor as regards grape health. Abundant sunny days and thermal amplitude favor a good maturity and concentration of aroma and color in the grain. Soils are deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, decisive qualities at the time of obtaining good wine. Due to the low rain regime, irrigation is necessary. Water comes from the Andean range thaw, descending in the shape of rivers to become channels or ditches. Undoubtedly, the combination of these factors turns Argentina into a veritable oasis for the highest quality wine-making. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. Wine-making in Argentina, at the level that it achieves today, has a young history that goes back to a little more than 10 years ago. Technological progress, investment and some farsighted businessmen enabled a determining transformation. The province of Mendoza is the most traditional area in the viticultural industry, and is diverse enough to be divided into zones, according to their significantly different weather, height and soil characteristics. These include the Northern Zone, which is suitable for fruity whites and young reds, at a height from 600 to 700m; the Eastern Zone, with a height ranging from 600 to 700m, and the most productive zone in the province; the Uco Valley, a zone of colder weather and higher altitudes (between 800 and 1,400m over sea level); San Rafael, with heights ranging from 450 to 800m; and the High Zone of the Mendoza River, with heights ranging from 800 to 1,100m over sea level and various microclimates, this is the zone where almost all noble varieties have easily become adapted. It is a region that is remarkably well-suited to vine culture, protected from the Pacific’s cooling influence by the Andes and enjoying a long summer of cool nights and warm days, with a dry summer climate but plenty of water available from the region’s rivers. Malbec in particular is outstanding from this area, and it has clearly emerged as the star, the darling of both consumers and critics.
