  • Dark garnet. A brooding wine, earthy, some farmyard, red fruit and oak spices. The palate was a bit too rustic for me. Nose 91, palate 88.

  • Zoom blind tasting #6: Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée (At home during circuit breaker): A very solid, if rather austere Vosne village. This has developed just a bit more since the last bottle I had 7 years back. Earthy and funky right off the bat, there were quite a bit of meat and soy inflections on the nose. Thankfully, these blew off sufficiently to show more fragrant notes of blueberries and other little dark fruit along with notes of bits of mineral, spice and a nice lifted floral character. There was still always a little bit of a funky edge on it though. The palate was amply structured, with firm, chewy tannins and a flush of slightly tart acidity forming a very textural backdrop for a fairly tight expression of blueberries and other wild berry fruit. There was quite a bit of girth on this, almost 1er Cru-like on the attack and mid-palate; but in spite of that and its stern structure, there was a nice clarity and a decent sense transparent purity to the fruit. Quite a bit of elegant strength for a village I thought. On the mid-palate, a shade of earth and mineral traced its way through a chew of blueberries and a nice blush of warm Vosne spice. With time, a little violet character came out as well. It was only towards the finish were this faltered slightly - clamping up on a tight bed of tannins and showing more soy and balsamic notes. Otherwise a decently well-crafted expression.

  • I liked this. The nose showed an understated melange of mineral, earth and plummy fruit. On the palate, juicier fruit expressions of plums, dark cherries and black cherries were were held up by a nice bit of acidity and a sturdy structure, where what seemed to be previously hard, slightly woody tannins have began to yield to a gradual softening. Decent finish too, with orange peel hints pulling away into the distance. This still has a touch of 1995 austerity to it, but I did like the quality of the fruit and the quiet sense of structure and poise it had. A few more years and it should be very nice.

  • No formal notes taken... From Memory; Slightly cloudy ruby color. Somewhat reticent nose of blood, slight animale, peat and darkish red fruits. Forward attack with nice acidity and fruit, midpalate of iron and earth that becomes overshadowed with oak and tannin. Finish was drying and slightly green. Hopefully will integrate further with a few years, but the finish may never round itself out. I wouldn't call it a big dissapointment, but it was hardly earth shattering.

  • Deep ruby color. Rich, ripe black fruit nose, with persistant new wood overtones. In fact the fruit in the nose requires some coaxing to poke its head out from behind the oak. On the palate, the new wood is even more dominating, sadly because the ripe black and red fruit seems lovely. Never would have guessed this wine was made by Anne Gros, nor that it came from Vosne. A big disappointment. Maybe there will be some improvement on day two.
