| Community Tasting Notes (average 84 pts. and median of 84 pts. in 1 note) | | | Tasted by Brian1970 on 3/8/2008 & rated 84 points: Pale golden color. Non-descript, honeyed nose. On the palate, more one-dimensional honey flavor, with a bite of green citrus tang and bitter finish. Serviceable with food, but nothing to write home about. The score would be even a few points lower, but for the fact that I'm admittedly a sucker for high residual sugar. Kalyra is an incredibly fun winery to visit in Santa Ynez, and I do enjoy their dessert wines ("stickies"). But this Riesling didn't bring its "A" game. (395 views) |

Winery says: "The vineyards of Vina de Santa Ynez are some of the oldest commercial vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. These Riesling grapes come from one of the cooler parts of the property and display classic varietal characteristics. Picked at night from old, low yield vines, the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks with no oak aging or influence at all. Unlike the classic German style this wine has balanced acids and subtle apricot and peach overtones. This off dry style Riesling is perfect for the summer months with rich forward fruit and a delicious finish. The beauty of Riesling is its great food pairing qualities. Try with pan seared scallops, a macadamia crusted sea bass or your favorite summer salad."

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)
California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.

Experience Santa Ynez Valley Wineries (Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country)
Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive, while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhone blends.
