Nice overall flavor profile - relatively rich fruit anchored by a dollop of oak. Adds complexity with air / time in the glass, without losing depth. Lacks a bit in overall structure / backbone, specifically acidity as tannins do make an appearance the longer this is in the glass. For me, a near term drinker, but a very pleasant one. Don't see a lot of reason to hold this. I'll be drinking my remaining by 2017.
2003 Piedmont Party (Troy & Gina's): I was looking forward to this wine, but given the location of Ms. Boschis's vines in central Cannubi (a low lying vineyard) I was not expecting great things from this incredibly hot vintage.
The wine was well made. The care she took was evident, but I think the vintage got the best of her, as it did many in 2003. The color was deep for Barolo. The nose was pleasant and typical, but not exceptional. Same on the palette. In the end, this was a very good, but not great, wine.
Nose: Well balanced with dark red cherries, red berries, roasted herbs, and bits of tar. There is a perfumed quality with a red fruit base.
Taste: Medium/Full bodied with medium+ acidity and hard tannins. The tannins don't feel like they will will ever truly soften with dark red cherries, red berries, roasted herbs, and some incense on the back end.
Overall: This is a really good 03. It is what it is and it doesn't have that extra gear to make it really good. The acidity and tannins do creep in and show themselves in a big way, so it may be interesting to see where this goes with a few more years.
