  • Bought 4b for 27/b from Garagiste 13 years ago; this is #2. Beautiful, dark purple; reticent dark berry nose, reticent body, good mouthfeel. Held some for 24h under vacuvin, and fruit emerged along with a hint of oxidation. Worth another try. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. Quality, price, age: Notable-.

  • Clear deep garnet; clean medium plus nose of blueberry, dried plums, dried cherries and cocoa - almost port-like in character; dry; high acidity; high tannins; high alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn with a bit of sour cherry; long finish; outstanding quality; still very acidic and tannic - could age for much longer - not sure it will mellow much more; 70 Sangiovese and 30 Merlot

  • Still ferociously tannic, but also showing lots of secondary herbal flavors, leafy, peppery, earthy. Decanted and aerated multiple times, then drunk with a sausage and garlic heavy pasta dish, which hardly made a dent in the wine's structural integrity. Overall pretty enjoyable, but I really don't see the tannins in this wine softening up before all the fruit is gone.

  • Subtle nose, with leather and spices. Still massively structured, and though the tannins have softened a bit over the years, the shear quantity is a challenge. Very good depth of fruit, and solid acidity. Later on, with food, as usual, this is fantastic. Great balance, and a great food wine.

(GIORGIO PRIMO La Massa) Primo Deal Dear Friends, In the realm of insane bargains, this one may very well take the cake. This is another instance that I will apologize to Niki in advance as I feel a record response coming on... La Massa's Giorgio Primo is a revered, perennial Tre Bicchieri heavyweight and Siepi wana-be (with even more intensity) from the golden zone of Panzano and it is one thing: never discounted. I've never seen this wine for less than $40, even in Italy. When a few cases made their way around the US last month at the $40-50 level I knew it was a sign of a receding market but the price we offer today is a little bizarre. There are not many wines over the last decade that have held up to pricing pressures in every vintage but the Giorgio Primo has been one of them - routinely selling in the $50-60 range for Chianti Classico and every vintage has sold through with little problem. The wine is now labeled as an IGT (instead of simply Chianti Classico so they can tweak the percentage of Bordeaux varietals, in this case, Merlot) but that has only served to increase the price. Considered a pioneer in the modern movement in Chianti Classico (or a heretic by others), love it or disdain it, the Giorgio Primo drinks like a combination of 2003 Left Bank Bordeaux mixed with a dose of Masetto jr. - it is a huge wine with slathered tannins and extract that will pummel those sheepish enough to meet it with anything less than their best. Maybe it's not your father's Chianti Classico but (when it's on) it competes with the most expensive wines in Tuscany and today it's at a price I never thought I would see - ever: Another contender for deal of the year (or at least low-price of the year), this is literally a one-off situation - first come first served up to 60/person until we run out. If we run out, there are still 5-10 cases floating around upstate NY and a few cases in Oregon in the $40-45 range (which is still a significant discount). This parcel has perfect provenance and will arrive in a few weeks - it is not via the grey market: 2003 La Massa "Giorgio Primo" IGT (Chianti Classico Riserva) (GR3) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy6122
