  • What a sweet spot this wine is in. I'm usually a fan of decanting even older wines but this was a pnp. Brett can throw me off but here it plays with the fruit which are on the black spectrum, also herbs, smoke and leather. Velvety tannins. Deserves grilled meat. Drink or hold.

  • Ruby red in color. 14% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, blood, Herbes de Provence and leather. Medium body with medium acidity. Rustic fruits in spades. Well balanced. Strawberry, kirsch, iron and roasted herbs on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish with notable tannins. Classic CdP from an overlooked vintage. Best over the next 2-4 years.

  • Well developed and very drinkable, yet early in drinking window. Substantial wine with very dark core and no evidence of age or decline. Well integrated neutral oak. Grippy tannin, dark blue and black fruits, fresh Provencal herbs, subtle Rhone earth.
Drunk from bottle, over an hour. Deserves 2 hour decant.
Long life ahead in a proper cellar.

  • Chateauneuf du pape tasting (at my home): Nose:
Dark fruit: A powerful array of ripe, dark fruits dominates the nose, including black cherry, blackberry, plum, and cassis. Some suggest hints of blueberry and raspberry may also emerge.
Herbal notes: The classic Southern Rhone garrigue notes of thyme, rosemary, and lavender interweave with the fruit, adding complexity and freshness.
Spices: Subtle hints of pepper, licorice, and even star anise may appear, adding further layers of intrigue.
Oak: While the wine spends time in oak, it's well-integrated and doesn't overpower the fruit. Notes of vanilla, mocha, and tobacco might be present but remain in the background.
    Palate:
Full-bodied: This is a rich and powerful wine, but not heavy or cumbersome. It fills the mouth with its dense concentration of fruit.
Velvety tannins: The tannins are ripe and smooth, providing structure without being harsh or astringent.
Balanced acidity: Despite its richness, the wine retains a bright, refreshing acidity that keeps it lively and energetic.
Long finish: The finish is long and lingering, echoing the notes of dark fruit, spice, and garrigue.
    Overall:
The 2006 Clos des Papes is a complex, harmonious, and age-worthy wine. It showcases the power and elegance of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at its finest.
