| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 23 notes) | | | Tasted by Villon on 1/11/2010 & rated 89 points: Très bien, légèrement trop boisé, style racoleur. (266 views) | | | Tasted by sbrehmer on 12/15/2009 & rated 89 points: Bright floral and cherry nose upon opening. Cherry and cranberry taste with an acidic lemon finish. Gained complexity and improved after decanting for 1 hour. Spice, forest floor, strawberry, pomegranate are all coming through. Nice balance of earth and fruit. Great QPR. (523 views) | | | Tasted by THaas on 11/27/2009 & rated 90 points: When first opened, a bounty of cherry and cranberry both in the nose and the mouth. As the wine breathes, it begins to show it's terroir, with more dark notes coming along for the ride -- baking spice, cinnamon, and a touch of loam. Balance is excellent, and the finish is long.

Dried pine needle strawberry nose. Plush lemon & strawberry entry, brambly crushed leaves middle, lingering lemon strawberry/sweet tannins finish. Touches all the bases. Has the requisite & balanced fruit, tannin & acidity to last & improve many years. Very good QPR as far as burgundy goes. The finish is shortish but grows the longer the wine is open. Lots of finesse here, perfume, rich fruits, wonderfully integrated fruit and a sublte chunk of limestone. This is everything a Mercurey should be. Plump but this is the theme I have got with the 05 vintage. Drink now - 2011 Excellent Quality. (1494 views) | | | Tasted by Gelco on 5/17/2009 & rated 87 points: Nez alcooleux et fruits surmuris. An attractive nose dominated by cherry fruit, which shows through on the charming palate. A beautiful example of a lighter-styled red Burgundy in a great vintage. (1856 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 2/12/2009 & rated 88 points: Drank at Lumiere - Pronounced nose of red fruits and tobacco. Light to medium body, medium to high acidity, low tannin. Flavours red fruits. Easy drinking. Medium finish. Very good. (1803 views) | | | Tasted by DrEdwardo on 11/15/2008: similar notes. for C$30 a very good QPR (2314 views) | | | Tasted by DrEdwardo on 11/9/2008: ruby red color. floral dark cherry pomegranate nose. dark cherry lemon squirt finish with supple tannin support. very good QPR. Very enjoyable wine. (1936 views) | | | Tasted by apes on 6/20/2008 & rated 90 points: Very good bottle, great nose floral, earth, cherry. taste well integrated, acid fruit, a little dr. pepper. 2nd day after refridge a little tart. will buy more, interested to see how it will age. (2281 views) | | | Tasted by drdebs on 1/29/2008 & rated 88 points: Earth, spice, and cherry aromas and palate. Brightness in the mid-palate, with a nice silkiness to the texture. (2499 views) | | | Tasted by d'Artagnan on 9/8/2007 & rated 90 points: Bonté divine! (2807 views) | | | Tasted by Finare Vinare on 9/1/2007 & rated 88 points: Dark colour. Warm, quite complex nose with young fruitiness of forest berries and cherries and a hint of tomato purée. Oak, sandalwood, spices and a touch of undergrowth and mushrooms. Day 1. Austere, good taste, high and fine acidity, dark fruit, some oak. Slightly short. Day 2. Really good taste with shining raspberries, tomato stem, pinot spicyness and a rounder, more generous mouthfeel. Enjoyable wine - immediate appetite for more of this. Short term cellaring recommended. (3188 views) |

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.
