  • Can't say that I'm sad to see these bottles go. An egomaniacal experiment gone awry. That said, I was a big fan of GV at the time. Jammy fruit with too much toasted oak, and noticeable ABV. It does have a nice velvety mouthfeel though.

  • After a couple more years and a 2-hour decant, the oak has subsided (first, and previous, bottle consumed in 2018). Good acidity and medium tannins. Kind of one-dimensional "jammy oak,", so if you favor that style, you won't be disappointed [NB: Wife says it reminds her of cough syrup]. While my prior review noted, "don't like," I've now moved to "neutral." This is not a great improvement, given what I paid for this wine. And, I think that I'm going to stick with my previous score (88). I'll either share, or give, the one remaining bottle to someone that appreciates this style more than me.

  • Better than I expected, holding up pretty well 12 years in. Still not much complexity, but pleasant and reasonably well balanced with decent black/red fruits offset by soft tannins and a little acidity. The high alcohol noted years ago has receded and the over-oakiness has mellowed. 5+12+16+5

  • Still pretty quaffable, 12 years later.

This was my last bottle, so long vayniac nation.

  • Like many others, I drank from the Vayniac Kool-Aid 10-12 years ago. Fortunately, I only bought 3 three bottles of this much-hyped experiment. Today, I open my first bottle.

Only decanted for about 1/2 hour at this point. Some faint vanilla (from the oak??) and mint on the nose, along with licorice and currants. Sweet black cherries on the palate, with some noticeable alcohol heat. Also, something like charred oak flavors and oak tannins (or dry tannins) on the side of my mouth, rather than rounder tannins on the tongue. Good presence on the mid-palate and finish, though.

I'm really wanting to like this, especially given what I paid for these, but can't go much higher than 88 at this point. Maybe more air time will help.

Nope. After a couple hours in the decanter, it has jammy fruit, which is not an improvement.

The Vayniac Cabernet has Finally Arrived, Episode #790, 12/21/2009, (See more on Wine Library TV...)

(Vayniac Napa Cabernet Sauvignon) COLOR-dark; NOSE-gorgeous black cherries and black currants; it's a big nose coming across with very serious structure; a hint of cedar box and tobacco on the back-end, but very dark fruit; PALATE-great grip on the mid-palate; more approachable than I expected; the tannins are sweet; there's a really black tea meets black currant inkiness that I find quite exceptional; it showing great youth; quite surprised how structured this is for being so young; the fruit is quite sweet; this is for those who like Caymus and Shafer as it has fruit; it's smooth and it's big; candied raspberry; GV-No Score
